(KATIE DUNCAN VOICEOVER) The Cougar Cottage, also known as The Coug has been a Pullman tradition for 87 years. While it may appear to be just another college bar, the true meaning of The Coug lies within in the bar. (KATIE DUNCAN VOICEOVER) According to a history pamphlet provided by The Coug, the Coug began selling alcohol in 1973. The one thing that has remained the same was the customers writing on the walls. (SOT LANCE LIJEWSKI) Um, it’s kind of one of those things, we have pens behind the bar but in a lot of cases people will bring their own in. Um, there’s really no restrictions on writing specifically on wooden panels and using Sharpies on the tables and what not. (KATIE DUNCAN VOICEOVER) The walls are covered with signatures of Washington State University alumni, current students and members of the W-S-U.(SOT LISA THOMPSON) We spent all day kind of just hanging out here and a lot of us came and went and came back. (KATIE DUNCAN VOICEOVER) The Coug is a place where relationships are formed and built, and even have led to marriages and families. (SOT LISA THOMPSON) I met this couple over this recent football season, they came in, they are from Spokane and this past summer they had their wedding on top of the library. They walked down here afterwards and signed their marriage license. (KATIE DUNCAN VOICEOVER) The artwork and the writing on the walls cover The Coug with stories and legacies from W-S-U and Pullman community members. The Coug continues to tell the stories of people who frequent The Coug. (SOT LANCE LIJEWSKI) The Coug itself is a building, the Coug itself is a restraint and bar brand. Its voice is everyone who spends time here. A million faces is still a face, but it is also faceless. Its an oxymoron but its super cool that the coug itself is not special its everyone whose been a part of the coug, will be a part of the coug, who is a part of the coug that makes it special. It’s the most important reason why we continue to have people to write on the walls. ................
