Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),

NAEP – The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) is the largest continuing and nationally representative assessment that shows what students across the country know and can do in various subjects. It is different from our state assessments and even the SAT and ACT because it represents high school students across the country, not just those here in our state or those who plan to go to college. The NAEP is an important and integral part of education in the United States. The results of the NAEP are released as The Nation’s Report Card. I am excited to announce that MacArthur High School has been selected to participate in this years’ NAEP. Some of our twelfth graders have been selected to participate in this important test. The test will be administered this Friday, March 1st. Students will be out of class for about 120 minutes for the assessment. The students do not have to do anything to prepare for the assessment, but we do want them to do their very best.

Encouraging your student to participate if they are selected, and to do their very best, gives them the opportunity to show how well our nations’ students, and especially our Brahmas can perform. Elected officials, policymakers, and educators all use the NAEP results to develop ways to improve education. If your senior has been selected, please encourage them to participate and to do their very best. Go Brahmas!

Here is all the news for the week:

MAC NHS – National Honor Society Service Hour Due Dates – Spring 2019

Due dates are as follows: Class of 2019 (seniors), April 10th and Class of 2020 (juniors), May 10th. Events for “in” hours are posted in and announced via our Remind accounts. Please remember that once a member signs up for an event, attendance is expected. This will also help prevent non-completion of required hours. Please remind you student of this important expectation if they are a member of the National Honor Society. Go Brahma NHS!

SCHOOL CHOICE - February 28th is the last day parents can apply for School Choice. The link for parents to apply will not be functioning after this date. Remember that new students enrolling in NEISD for grades K-12 will have 5 days to apply for School Choice from the student’s “verified enrollment date.” Further information regarding School Choice can be found in NEISD’s Elementary and Secondary Student/Parent Handbooks.

SCHOOL BUS RIDERS - Please be aware, there is a “School Bus Transportation Guideline” that all NEISD schools must follow.  For this reason, and the safety of all our students, we cannot allow students to randomly ride a different school bus to a friend or relative’s house.  If there is an emergency, we must have a written note signed by parent or guardian, explaining the reason for the request. Written requests must be turned in to the Main Office as soon as possible, as we must still call to confirm that it is a valid request. Processing can take some time, so it cannot be done at the bus circle during afternoon departure.  When emergencies do come up, we will try our best to assist. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

CLEAR BACKPACKS - All students are still required to carry clear backpacks. In spite of rumors to the contrary, this has not changed. Students are still required to carry only CLEAR BACKPACKS. Non-clear backpacks are subject to being confiscated. It is very important that you remind your child of this requirement.

MAC SENIORS -

Please contact the Senior Class Sponsors, April Moyer (amoyer@) or Spencer Cox (scox5@) if you have questions about Senior Events.

ACTIVITIES -

MAC WRESTLING - Mac wrestling traveled to the State Tournament with three qualifiers. When you get down to the final 16 wrestlers in your weight class from all around the state, the competition is definitely tough, but our Mac Wrestlers represented us well.

Dakota Drew wrestled tough, but was unable to pick up a win going 0-2. As a second year sophomore wrestler the future looks bright for Dakota!

At 120 Gibi Gamez started out with a convincing victory in his first match. Then he ran into the eventual runner-up and dropped a tough match. On the backside of the tournament, he ran into another really tough match up and dropped a tough decision. Gibi has been a great senior leader on this team and he will be missed!

At 152 Shawn Jarrett-Izzi wrestled hard, but was unable to pick up a victory going 0-2 in a very tough weight class. Shawn is a 4 year letterman, and a great senior leader for Mac Wrestling he will also be missed.

Overall, it has been a great season for Mac Wrestling, and while we will be losing some great seniors, we know that our freshman and sophomores will step up to fill their shoes and represent Mac on the mat. That being said, Mac wrestling is always looking for hard working guys and girls to join the program and learn one of the worlds’ oldest sports. Contact Coach Keresztury for more information. Go Brahma Wrestling!
