To whom it may concern: This is a working outline of the William Clingan family of Trumbull county Ohio. I do not claim that all the names are in their proper place, but all of them are part of the Trumbull county family. It may never be possible to trace them to a point where we can be 100% sure they are correct, but I believe this is at least 90% correct as far as I can tell. Since I use what I call, investigative genealogy, adding from time to time names I find and can not immediately put with a family so that person will not be lost to future genealogists or I put some ideas in which I believe to be feasible and also probable, but not in any way proven so that future generations may have an idea of what to look for down the road. I urge future researchers to be on the lookout for errors as information becomes available. If you find something here you know to be incorrect, please advise me of it so I can change my record. My email is wlc32@woh.

Trumbull County OH and Mohoning County OH and Mercer County PA People

From the book, "The Clingan Clan", written by Floyd Bullock , I am going to type a letter which was sent to Edna Clingan Hanson many years ago. It was originally sent to a May Clingan and eventually wound up in the hands of her sister Marion Clingan of Tryon N.Carolina, who sent it on to Edna. I am not quoting it exactly the way it is written because in places the meaning does not flow clearly, and I believe needs to be clarified. The truth is still there, unchanged however.

Cincinnati Ohio, July 4,1904

Dear Miss Clingan,

1 It is not at all fair to have neglected your query so long, my brother in St. Louis has reminded me again that you wished to hear from our branch of the Clingan family. It was only that our information would of necessity be so meager that I have delayed writing.

The earliest knowledge we have is that during one of the many religious persecutions in England, a Clingan, (Name unknown, nationality unknown) took his family to the north of Ireland for safety, after which he returned to England and joined the army where he was killed in battle. His widow, also unknown, remained in Ireland and brought up her seven sons, no daughters that we know of. She was the grandmother of my grandfather. I do not know the names of any of her sons beyond that of my Greatgrandfather, it was William, and he married a woman named Mitcheltree in Ireland. We do not know whether she was Irish or not. She proved to be a good Christian woman and brought her family up in Christian atmosphere.

They came to America when my grandfather, William Jr., was five years old at the time. In leaving Ireland, he left behind his mother and 6 brothers along with his oldest son, John, who was being trained by his uncle to be a Methodist minister.. John later followed his father to America where he settled in Wood county Ohio. The news of his coming was the last word we received of the old country.

This William, was noted for his great strength and size, and had a daughter, Betsy, and three sons, John whom we have already mentioned, Thomas and William Jr. (William Jr. must have received abundant strength from his father because one of the histories of Trumbull County tell how he carried logs upon his back from the woods to the home he was building, simply because there was no other means of transportation.) Probably the order of birth for the children was, John, Betsy, Thomas and William.

William, my grandfather married Lydia Roberts at Hubbard County Ohio in 1805 and fathered 4 sos and 5 daughters: Lydia, Amy, Margaret, Elizabeth, Angeline, Jeheil, William, Adonijah, Edward.

They settled not far from His father in Ohio (Mercer County being on One side of the Pennsylvania line and Trumbull county Ohio on the Other) My father, Edward Clingan, The youngest of the boys, married Elizabeth Miles in Middlesex PA. Together they had six children. John, Mary Ellen, the author of this particular letter, a sister, unknown. The two girls never married and died by the time Bullock did this work.

They lived in Indianapolis together and later on in St.Louis.

William married a second time to a woman named Stewart and had two more children Mary Jane and Ellen.

My grandfather was a noted Presbyterian elder. (hence the name "deacon" which he carrried for his life) Noted for his rigid adherance to Scriptural doctrine. He beieved God created the world and all that was in and around it in 6 days, no argument could persuade him to the contrary. He was noted for his piety, he lived to be 98 years old and had a stroke of paralysis. The only words he couls say were "Lord Jesus". He never failed to ask the blessing at meal time and return thanks when the meal was finished. He had worship morning and evening and always retired to his room for quiet prayer. death found him so engaged.

Here is a writeup on Dr.Thomas Omar Clingan which I found on the internet from which I derived a lot of the of this family:

The Clingans have been known and respected in this section of eastern Ohio for considerably more than a century. Dr. Clingan's grandfather, William "Deacon" Clingan, were natives of the north of Ireland. When William was five years of age the family came to America and located on a farm in Mercer County PA. near the Ohio border.

( Notice this does not say how long they were in the country before they came to Mercer County, it may have been number of years before they left the east and traveled to Mercer County.

sergeant of the Aviation Department during World War 1and Thomas Omar Clingan.

They were prominant among the many Scotch-Irish in that locality and Thomas Clingan , (From the letter above, this would appear to be William Jr's brother) by many years of persistant and energetic labor, reclaimed a farm from the rugged wilderness of Western Pennsylvania. Some of the family moved across the state line into what is now Trumbull and Mahoning Counties in Ohio. (I wondered why it was Thomas built the farm instead of William Sr. But it is not surprising if you consider he was about 52 when they came to this country and no doubt stayed in the east for perhaps 20 years before venturing to Mercer County PA which would make him and old man by then.)

Dr. Clingan was born in Coitsville, Mohoning County, Jan.23,1852. His father, Edward Merideth Clingan, was born in Trumbull County in 1824, and at the age of 27, after having followed the family occupation of farming. He then bought a saw mill, and moved it out to Belle Plaine, Minnesotta. He was in Minnesotta during the pioneer days, when the territory was out on the Northwest frontier. At the beginning of the Civil War occurred a great indian uprising, involving the massacre of hundreds of people. and the destruction of many homes. Among the points attacked was Monakato, twelve miles from Belle Plaine, wither many refugees gathered for protection. On account of these unsettled conditions Edward M. Clingan returned east, abandoning what was a profitable and promising business in the handling of grain anfd livestock. He was a pioneer in the sheep industry of Minnesotta. In the fall of 1863 he returned to Hubbard Ohio and later moved to Poland Ohio in order to educate his children in the noted Poland Seminary. He continued a sheep buyer, and drove a number of flocks through to Chicago, though he also shipped by rail. Upon the discovery of oil he went to PA and bought lands on Oil Creek, mapped them and going to eastern cities sold his properties at a high prifit. During one of these trips he contracted a severe cold and his death in 1867 was the direct result. He was married to Elizabeth Miles.

Dr. Clingan, one of five (six, accordig to the letter above) children, three of whom are still living (at the time of this writing), was well educated in local schools, graduated in the classical course from Westminster College in Western PA in 1880, and then took up the study of medicine. He completed his course and received his degree in 1884 from the Cleveland Homopathic Hospital College. After a breif practice in Lucerne, PA, he located at Niles Ohio in 1885 and has been diligently engaged in the routine of a private practice ever since.............

DECEMBER 5,1888, Dr. Clingan married Margaret Thomas, daughter of John R. Thomas of Niles. They have four children: Margaret, wife of George Wick; Elizabeth, Mrs.John Hosack; John R. Clingan, who was a

sergeant of the Aviation Department during World War 1and Thomas Omar Clingan.

Here is what I gleaned from this letter:

1. An Englishman had a wife and seven sons in danger of "religious persecutions"in England".

2. He took them to Ireland in order to save them from the danger, possibly to her folks home.

3. Being a loyal Englisman he went back, joined the army, and was killed.

4. The mother was a good mother and raised her sons in a Christian atmospere.

5.The eldest, at least I am assuming he was oldest, was named William.

6.He married a woman named Mitcheltree, and had four children, John, William, Thomas, and Betsy.

7.The other sons remain nameless..

8.William left his mother and brothers behind to travel to America, also leaving his eldest son as well.

9.John was left because his uncle was educating him for the Methodist Ministry.

10.When John finished his education he followed the family to America.

11.William was a man of unusal strenth and size. For some reason he married a second time.

12.His son William Jr. was 5 years of age when they arrived in America.

13.The son William Jr.settled in Ohio not far from where his father settled.

14.William Jr. took a wife, Lydia Roberts, in 1805, they had 4 sons, 5 daughters.

15.Mrs Clingan was possibly the first of many Mitcheltrees to come to America. If the Englih father took her home to her parents, Mitcheltrees, It is very probable that some of them came to America with them.

16.William Jr. Lived to be 96 years old, was five years old when he came here.

Some conclusions I have come to from this letter:

William Sr.'s six children left in Ireland make great candidates for future Clingan immigrants.

Using increments of 25 years per generation, I have come to these ages:

William Jr. died in 1868. He died at 96, he was born c.1772 , he came to America c. 1777.

William Sr. was born approximately 25 years earllier, c1747, married a Miss. Mitcheltree c.1769.

He would have been about 52 when he came to America.

William Sr.'s father was born c.1722 Married c.1744.

If the English father returned her to her home, It would appear tome that they were Mitcheltrees of Irish descent.

Let's say the Clingans left to go to America four years after Williams birth, took one full year to make the trip, making him 5 when they reached America in 1776 and John was about 15 yrs when he started his apprentice preacher schooling

.

It is possible that this woman, as some genealogist have said, was actually the daughter of Ann Jane Mitcheltree Clingan, the daughter of an English soldier from whom they were separated.

Alittle more is said concerning her in the Mitcheltree file.

It is possible that the following Thomas should be in the family file of William Jr. due to the age. Although, all the lists I have found of his family have no reference of Thomas in them.

0.William Clingan abt.1747 IRE

Ann Mitcheltree b.1760 IRE I found her in the 1850 census in Mercer County PA age 80 I thot for a while this might be William’s wife, but on second thoughi this may be Ann Jane Clingan, on the other hand, if she were she, her name wouldn’t be Mitcheltree/

I believe this is the George that sired the Keokuck County family in Iowa, born in 1818, I think at this point he was probably the son of Thomas, son of William Sr . However, this is strictly a guess. He was in western PA, probably West Middlesex of Mercer County before he came to Trumbull County, Ohio. This pretty much matches the story of the rest of the family.

Julie Hurst, wife of Adonijah Clingan(listed below) was born and raised in Coitsville Ohio. Her parents donated land for a church there of which they were probably the first members. A notice taken from the slaten Genealogy Forum sheds more light on the life and death of May Clingan Slaton:

MAY CLINGAN WIFE OF ISOME NEWTON SLATEN

Isome Slaten(son of Hugh Slaten Sr. and the first of his three wives) was married two times. Isome was also known as Bud or Uncle Bud. He was my father'soldest half brother. My father Hugh Jefferson Slaten Jr. , was the son of Hugh and his therd wife, Martha Ann Lewis. signed Lenell M. Slaten

May Clingan was born April 22,1871, at Lee's Summit, Jackson County, Missouri. She and Isome Slaten were married May 26,1899, in Owwego, Labette County,Kansas. She was his second wife, and Isome was her only husband. They were farmers. Their four oldest children were born in the Cherokee Nation and the last three in Oklahoma.

May Clingan graduated from Elk City High School, Elk City Kansas before 1891.

May taught country school in Cherokee Nation prior to her marriage. The Eaton News column, which may have been the Independence Daily Reporter, Independence Kansas, circa November 20,1938, relates to an Oklahoma farm community. The column reads,"Friends of this community were shocked and grieved to learn of the passing of Mrs. May Slaten of Elk City Kansas, as Mrs. Slayten , in the years before her marriage, taught a three month subscription school at the old Rock schoool house. Her maiden name was Miss May Clingan. Her many friends in this community extend sympathy to relatives and friends.

On her 18th birthday, May had an extremely exciting day as shje rode her pony........into Indian Territory on Monday April 22,1889. She made the first Oklahoma Land Run over unassigned and former Indian lands which began at noon that day. May, her father, and at leaast one brother rode horse so her father and brother or brothers could stake out homestead claims. Being a woman, she could make the run, but could not stake a claim according to the homestead law signed by President Benjamin Harrison.

The obituary of May appeared in an Independence, Kansas newspaper......The obituary reads:

Mrs, I.S. Slaten, 67, a resident of the Elk City community for 21 years, died at 3:35 Friday afternoon, November 18,1938 at Mercy hospital, where she had been for treatment for the last few days.............

Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoonNovember 200 at 2:30 from the Elk City Christian Church....... burial will be at the Oak Hill Cemetery.
