Overview

Students will interview their classmates to find out what they did over Spring Break in an effort to practice forming verbs in the past tense. Afterwards, each student will compile his/her results in an excel spreadsheet. The final step will be a visual representation in the form of a chart or graph in an attempt to explain what teenagers do in their spare time.

Goals

1. Students will create 10 questions in the “tu” form of the preterite (past tense verb).

2. Students will survey classmates and ask & answer questions in Spanish.

3. Students will create an Excel spreadsheet to display findings.

Instructional Topic:  Using the Preterite

Prerequisites: Prior Knowledge of forming the preterite, Knowledge of Vocabulary, Excel

Directions:

Day 1: Students will form 10 questions and conduct research.

Day 2: Compile data and create Excel Spreadsheet.

Interest Approach (or Purpose)

Students love to interact and talk about their hobbies, so this is a good way to apply the past tense of the verb.

Each student will form his/her research questions independently so that the results are not all the same.

PO1

Each student will create his/her own questions using the familiar “tu” form of the preterite. Performance will be satisfactory if the student can successfully form 10 questions and conjugate the verbs properly.

Note: This performance objective is only associated with Goal 1 (above) and Activity 1 (below), but is necessary for PO2.

PO2

After the student has his questions, he may begin research. Students can create tables (teacher will provide example) in order to easily record data. Performance will be satisfactory if students are communicating in Spanish (both the researcher and the respondent). The teacher will be circulating the room listening to conversation. In addition, students should have ample information by the end of this activity. This activity should be completed by the end of Day 1.

Note: This performance objective is only associated with Goal 2 (above) and Activity 2 (below).

PO3

Students will enter data into Excel Spreadsheet. They can refer back to Tutorial when necessary. After entering data, each student will generate a visual representing the popularity of each activity among classmates. Performance will be satisfactory if the student has created an Excel Spreadsheet as well as a graph or chart detailing activities.

[Note: This performance objective is only associated with Goal 3 (above) and Activity 3 (below).]

Activities:

1. Form 10 questions in the “tu” form of the preterite (example: Did you water ski over spring break – Hiciste el esqui acuatico durante las vacaciones? )

[Note: This activity is linked to Goal 1 and Performance Objective 1.]

2. Interview classmates (IN SPANNISH) and record data.

[Note: This activity is linked to Goal 2 and Performance Objective 2.]

3. Input data into Excel Spreadsheet and create visual representation. Refer to Excel Tutorial and Teacher example if necessary.

[Note: This activity is linked to Goal 3 and Performance Objective 3.]

Materials: (examples)

1. Textbooks – Level 2

2. Paper & pen/pencil

3. COW carts with laptops & Excel

Resources:

• Handout – Tutorial: Creating an Excel Document

• Handout – teacher Example

• Rubric

Assessment:

10 Questions: participation grade

Excel Sheet: Classwork grade

Visual Representation: Quiz grade

Additional Notes/Comments:

Since students love to socialize, this is a good activity. It forced them to use the past tense to describe their vacations. Also, they can use prior knowledge of vocabulary as well as new words. If students are stronger in the area of math and percentages, the Excel integration may peak their interest.
