E. Summary

A. You have been asked by the United States government to develop an ideal society--a utopian society. Racism, for example, cannot exist. Choose four challenges or problems -besides racism- that you must remove from society in order for it to be perfect.

B. NEXT, get into groups of 3 or 4. Discuss each of your lists. Create a group master list of at least 8 issues (add, combine, or adjust...no duplicate problems). Rank the ideas in order of most problematic (#1)-to least problematic...this will take discussion and debate! NEATLY print (by hand) your group’s prioritized master list.

C. After you have agreed on a prioritized list of at least 8 problems, each group member chooses 1 of the top problems, different from the rest of your group.

Each student will be responsible for creating a printed document that neatly displays and separates the following 3 sections related to your specific problem. There are many ways you can make this visually pleasing. You can insert text boxes in Word, or you can make a pie chart, or you can get creative.

All info in all sections should be written with competent, big-person complete sentences.

Section 1: 3 CAUSES of your issue; what things lead to your issue?

Section 2: 3 EFFECTS of your issue; what other problems are caused by your issue?

Section 3: RESEARCH and INCLUDE 3 relevant statistics from DIFFERENT legitimate sources about your issue.

Each section should include at least 2 interesting visuals to represent your ideas.

D. Now, as a group, share/explain your document, including what the visuals represent. As each person explains their doc, the group should brainstorm new ways to help or eliminate that problem from society. TALK about other possible cause-effect relationships. Will you change laws? Create new ones? How can you contribute to making society a perfect place?

As group discusses each doc, the person who created it should take notes right on the back. Include the suggestions for eliminating the problem. Describe some of the “rules” of your “new-and improved” society. How would these rules affect individuals? Schools? Families? Governments?

E. After each group member has shared their doc: Use the notes you took to compose your thoughts into a well written FULL page piece with the title:

“A World Without ___________”. Try to begin several sentences with a prepositional phrase.

Within the piece, explain the info you wrote in steps C-D. Tell why you think that problem is a major one in our society. Cite comments, examples, statistical support, and suggestions your group had about your issue, as well as the cause-effect relationship.

RACISM

Causes of Racism

1. Ethnocentrism may be a cause of racism: every culture tends to see themselves as “higher” or better than others

2. Racism is learned behavior: many parents pass this way of thinking down to their kids either by accident or on purpose.

3. Movies, tv shows, and commercials often continue to portray racial stereotypes, which seep into the audience’s thinking

Effects of Racism

1. All of our values and beliefs are easily and naturally passed down to the next generation

2. Inequality in schools and at work will keep generations of races at the same level of education or pay. Certain races will not be represented at top levels of businesses.

3. Racism could cause violence to escalate, which would lead to higher crime rates. This would produce a shortage in police forces.

Relevant Stastics on Racism

1. According to an NBC SurveyMonkey poll, 64% of Americans said racism remains a problem in our society.

2. 23% of Americans said “they have experienced discrimination in the workplace based on their race”.

3. According to the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics, black males accounted for the highest prison population at 37%.
