I nvasion in t he For est

Ther e was no doubt about it . Ser geant Sammy, t he r ed squir r el, was in char ge of t he whole squad of animals in The Animal Squadr on. Ot her animals had t r ied t o gain cont r ol but t hey had not done so.

Simon t he squid had t r ied t o per suade t he ot her animals t hat he was best f or t he j ob. "Look how many t ent acles I have got ," he said, "I would be able t o r each out and squash all our enemies wit h one big squeeze! I should be in char ge." But t he ot her animals had not list ened t o him.

"No way," squawked Ozzie t he Owl, "Sammy Squir r el is j ust r ight f or t he j ob."

Some animals had t r ied t o per suade Micky t he mouse t o over t hr ow Sammy but he was t oo squeamish f or t he j ob. "No, no," he squeaked, "I hat e t o be a damp squib but I don't t hink it is a good idea. Sammy is j ust r ight f or t he j ob."

So Sammy was in char ge. He made a plan t o get r id of t he gr ey squir r els who wer e t r ying t o t ake over t he wood. Thr ee gr ey squir r els had been seen squat t ing in t he big oak t r ee at t he edge of t he f or est . They had at t acked and killed poor old Molly t he Mole ? her squeals had been hear d f or miles ar ound. Willy t he wor m had seen what had happened and he squir med all t he way acr oss t he f or est t o t ell Sammy.

"Sammy," he had said, "I saw it all. They squeezed Molly unt il she was dead. She was squealing and cr ying. Then t hey t r ied t o hide t he body. They wer e squabbling wit h each ot her about what t o do wit h her . I t was hor r ible."

Sammy was ver y angr y. He called t oget her all of t he ot her animals. "Micky," he said t o t he mouse, "you ar e second in char ge. You will lead a squadr on t o wat ch t he gr ey squir r els. Now t her e is somet hing I know about t hem t hat will help us get r id of t hem..."

Chapt er Two

Ar med wit h squeegee mops and bucket s of wat er , Ser geant Sammy, Micky t he Mouse, Dar r en t he Deer , Ozzie t he Owl, Billy t he Badger and

Vincent Vole made t heir way t o t he giant oak t r ee. Simon t he squid was wit h t hem, squashed int o one of t he bucket s of wat er . The plan was in hand. I t was muddy in t he f or est and t hey squelched t hr ough t he mud. I t was a br ight sunny day and t hey squint ed against t he sun in t heir eyes.

"We will soon be r id of t hose squat t er s," said Sammy.

The gr ey squir r els wer e asleep in t he heat of t he day. Ever yone knew t hey wer e lazy.

At t he bot t om of t he oak t r ee, t he animals put t heir plan int o act ion. Squeegee mops wer e put int o t he bucket s and loaded wit h ammunit ion. Gr ey squir r els hat e wat er ! Filling t he mops unt il t hey wer e dr ipping, t hey plunged t hem int o t he hole wher e t he gr ey squir r els slept ! They squeezed out as much wat er as t hey could. They loaded t heir weapons again!

The gr ey squir r els woke up wit h a st ar t ! They squelched out of t he hole. "St op! St op!" t hey squealed, "We ar e all squidgy."

As t hey j umped out of t he hole, Simon t he squid squir t ed t hem wit h ink! They wer e not gr ey squir r els any mor e but black ones! They squir med out of t he f or est as f ast as t hey could.

Chapt er Thr ee

The next day all t he animal squadr on met t oget her in t he squar e bet ween t he oak t r ees. They wer e squeaking wit h delight .

"Sammy," t hey said, "we want you t o be Squir e of t he For est f or ever and ever ."

And so t hey all lived happily ever af t er .
