QUALITY ASSURANCE

** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Include a mock-up if the project size and/or quality warrant taking such a precaution. The following is one example of how a mock-up on a large project might be specified. When deciding on the extent of the mock-up, consider all the major different types of work on the project.

Mock-Up: Provide a mock-up for evaluation of surface preparation techniques and application workmanship.

Include all stone unit types and sizes to be used including a typical corner condition, special shapes and mortar joint treatment. Clean the sample panel using the same materials and tools as planned for the final stone masonry construction.

Do not proceed with remaining work until workmanship and appearance are approved by Architect.

EXECUTION

EXAMINATION AND PREPARATION

** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Unacceptable substrates include painted, sealed, dirty concrete, brick, or masonry, unsound/deteriorating masonry, EIFS, fiber cement board. Do not use in direct contact with chemicals (de-icing minerals, salt, chlorine), submerged in water, or below grade..

Examination: Verify field that surfaces, substrates and conditions are suitable and ready to receive Work.

** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Wall penetrations and transitions between sidings must be properly flashed to shed water. See detailed drawings for transitions from other sidings, including flashing, casing bead, weep screed, and sealants.

Preparation:

Prepare area to receive work using the methods recommended by the manufacturer for achieving the best result for the substrate under the project conditions.

If preparation is the responsibility of another installer, notify Architect of deviations from manufacturer's recommended installation tolerances and conditions.

Do not proceed with installation until substrates have been prepared and deviations from manufacturer's recommended tolerances are corrected.

Commencement of installation constitutes acceptance of conditions.

** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Raw materials used in production may vary slightly. Manufacturer recommends that you blend stone from different boxes throughout your installation area. Variations are inherent in all manufactured stone and concrete products. Questions regarding suitability and acceptability must be resolved before installation.

INSTALLATION

** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** If installing Daltile Manufactured Stone over framing (wood or metal) with sheathing (plywood, OSB, rigid insulation, gypsum wall board, concrete board, fiber board). Delete if not required.

Installation over Framing:

Ensure all penetrations are properly flashed in watershed fashion.

Install water resistive barrier, overlapping the horizontal joints 2 inches (51 mm), shingle fashion. Vertical seams shall overlap 6 inches (152 mm).

In accordance with local building codes, install mesh or lath. Lath shall be installed horizontally, overlapping sheets 1 inch (25 mm) at the edges. Fasteners shall be spaced 6 inches (152 mm) on center vertically and 16 inches ( mm) on center horizontally and driven into the studs at least 1 inch (25 mm). Wrap lath around corners, at least 16 inches (406 mm) or to the next framing member.

Trowel a 3/8 inches (9.5 mm) nominal thick coat of mortar to the metal lath to create a mortar scratch coat. Press hard enough to firmly embed the lath with mortar.

Score or scratch the surface horizontally when mortar is ' thumbprint dry'.

** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Delete if not required.

Installation over Masonry:

** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Delete if not required.

Over Concrete, Masonry, Stucco, or Brick That Is Clean and Untreated:

Inspect new concrete surfaces for form oil. If form oil is present, use muriatic acid to etch the surface then rinse thoroughly and score the surface with a wire brush.

Apply bonding agent.

** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Delete if not required.

Over Concrete, Masonry, Stucco, or Brick That Is Dirty, Sealed or Painted: Return surface to original condition by sandblasting or waterblasting (wash area to remove sandblast dust) or attach lath with concrete nails. Use bonding agent on the wall and in the mortar mix.

** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** For new construction exterior applications, ensure that all penetrations (doors, windows, etc.) are properly flashed and sealed in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.

Application:

Mortar: Used to set stones, and to grout the mortar joint between stones. Premixed masonry mortar, masonry cement and sand, or Portland cement, lime, and sand.

** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Mortar consistency is best for application when it starts to stick to your trowel. Delete types not required.

Masonry Cement: Mix 1 part masonry cement with 2-1/4 parts masonry sand and potable water.

Cement/Lime: Mix 1 part Portland cement, 1 part lime, and 4.5 parts sand.

Premixed Mortar: Confirm with manufacturer that premixed mortar meets minimum requirement of 50 psi shear bond strength.

Joint Lines: Level and plumb. Snap horizontal chalk lines every 8 inches (200 mm) to ensure level installation.

** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Delete if not installing over masonry. This is especially important in hot or dry climates.

Scratch Coat: Moisten scratch coat.

Back of Stone: Moisten back of manufactured stone. Completely cover back of stone with mortar, at least 1/2 inch (13 mm) thick, and press stone into scratch coat to ensure bond, with excess appearing at edge of stone. Ensure complete coverage between the mortar bed and the surface of the stone.

Corner Pieces: Install corner pieces first. Alternate the long and short legs of the corner pieces in opposite directions. After corner pieces are installed, apply flat pieces starting at the outside working toward the center of the wall.

Cutting and Trimming: Use the edge of a trowel, nippers, or a circular saw with an abrasive blade to cut and shape stones. Broken stones can be trimmed and shaped to fill in any gaps.

Coat with mortar any cut or broken edges. Place cut edges up when they are above eye level and down when they are below eye level.

** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Delete for drystack applications.

Grouting Joints: In applications where a mortar joint is used, fill in the joints with a mortar bag, taking care to avoid getting mortar on the stones surface. Never use a wet brush, wire brush, acid or acid-based product to clean mortar from the surface of the stone.

Finishing Joints: Before finishing, allow mortar joints to become firm (approximately 30-60 minutes), then point with a jointing tool in accordance with specified grout style.

Brush Joints: Remove excess mortar then firmly compress and seal the edges around the stones. Brush stones and joints with a dry whisk broom to finish and clean the project.

** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** For drystack applications. Delete if not required.

Mortarless (Dry Stack) Application: In dry stack application where no mortar joints are used, add a bonding agent to the mortar mix. Install from the bottom up and keep joints as level as possible.

** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Manufacturer recommends sealing for dry-stacked applications or in harsh environments. Delete if not required.

Sealer: Seal manufactured stone veneer assembly.

Finished Appearance and Initial Cleaning:

Avoid smearing mortar on the surface of the veneers. Accidental smears shall be removed using a dry whisk broom only after mortar has dried completely.

Do not use a wet brush to clean mortar off surface of veneer. Do not use a wire brush as it will cause damage to the surface. Do not power-wash, sandblast, use acid or acid-based products.

Clean manufactured stone with a soft bristle brush and water. If stained with mineral deposits or efflorescence, stone may be cleaned with a diluted household vinegar solution (7 parts water, 1 part vinegar). Dirt or other materials may be removed with a strong solution of granulated soap or detergent and water with a bristle brush. Rinse thoroughly with clean water after cleaning.

PROTECTION

Protect installed products until completion of project.
