Primary 4Home Learning Pack Name_______This pack has been created to guide learning for the following few weeks. Please use the ideas provided throughout to guide your child’s learning for the next few weeks. If schools are closed for an extended period of time then teachers will use Google Classroom to provide learning opportunities and activities. Google Classroom can be accessed via Glow. To access this simply type in Glow to google and login. Login details begin ‘gw’ followed by a number and child’s name. The below screen should appear:When you login you should see a screen like this: From this launchpad you can also access a variety of other useful programmes to aid learning.Literacy ActivitiesA mixture of reading, writing, spelling and phonics should be carried out daily. It is recommended that your child completes 5 literacy tasks a week. They should follow a similar routine to in class which would involve a minimum of:Spelling to be completed for at least 30 mins every day3 reading tasks per week1 writing taskHandwritingReadingChildren can use a school book if this has been provided or any age-appropriate book they have at home. This can be fiction or non-fiction. Please continue to encourage your child to read aloud at least twice a week as well as reading independently daily. A discussion around the events in the book, the setting, characters actions, thoughts, feelings etc. would be helpful in ensuring your child understands the text on the days you hear them read aloud. In class, children are familiar with the following before, during and after reading strategies and should be able to complete tasks based on them independently:Predicting – Look at the front cover and blurb and use the clues to help make a prediction on what the book is about. Before beginning to read create a prediction about characters, setting and events or at the end of a chapter create a prediciton about what will happen next in relation to setting, characters involved and events.Scanning – Locate specific details in a text. Ask the children to locate words which describe a specific character, describe a setting etc.Skimming – Quickly find out what the text is about. Pick a page and ask the children to skim it and then tell you the main points.Self Questioning - Ask questions to help you better understand the text – Create a set of 5W questions about events, create a set of 5W questions in the role of a character.Visualising – What image is created in your head when reading? Create a storyboard of events , create a character mindmap, stop and sense as a character.Summarising – Pick out the main points from the book to summarise the story. Tell it in 4 or 6 prehension – Answering literal, (answers can be found in the text) inferential (clues to help you work out the answers will be found in text) and evaluative questions (need to give your own opinion).Literacy shed is also a great free tool with full literacy lessons provided. The children would watch a video and then complete the work provided. The teachers’ guides again provide discussion points and suggested work which are suitable for a range of different subjects. and PhonicsSee the grid provided below for activities and strategies your child can use to practise their phonemes, common words or spelling rules.New phonemes, common words and spelling rule words will be uploaded to Google Classroom on a weekly basis in the event of an extended school closure. For the time being, use the grid below to consolidate previously taught phonemes, common words and spelling rules. These words can be found in your child’s homework diary or homework jotter – focus on this term’s words first.Spelling and Phonics GridSpelling Activities/tasks – to practise the wordsPhonics Activities/tasks – to investigate and use the wordsPyramid WritingCreate a mnemonicSail WritingIdentify syllablesFancy WritingFind words within wordsBubble/block writingDiacritical markingMissing/Blue VowelsCreate sentences using wordsSpeed WritingGames on Galactic PhonicsBack/Air WritingCreate a wordsearchSpelling Ping PongCreate a phoneme storyRainbow WritingPhoneme flowerUpper and LowerText detective – find your sound in newspapers or bookType your wordsWrite a list of words containing your sound and then organise them by the number of lettersDotty writingWriting Your child should be completing at least one written task every day but should also complete an extended piece of writing at least once a week. Twinkl is free to parents in the event of a school closure, further information can be found on their website. child has been taught all of the handwriting joins, therefore in all written tasks your child completes they should be encouraged to join their letters, have correct letter sizes and write with fluency.Numeracy and MathsBelow are a range of areas and accompanying activities your child should be encouraged to complete, along with a list of useful websites to play maths/numeracy games. We recommend the children complete maths/numeracy tasks on a daily basis. In the event of the school being closed for an extended period of time work will be assigned to the children via SumDog - this can be tracked by your teacher (logins have been provided). Specific tasks and learning will also be assigned to your child via Google Classroom, accessed through Glow.MultiplicationThe children should work on their 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 10 times tables. They could speed write them by seeing how many they can write in 2 mins and challenge themselves to beat their score every day. Do snapping and clapping games. Create missing number sums involving the tables. They could also challenge themselves to recall division facts of learned tables.AdditionWritten addition can be completed by doing chimney sums with 3 digit numbers. Roll a dice six times to create two 3 -digit numbers. Add them both together. Also continue to work on mental addition within 100 and extend to 3 digit numbers if able. Use the strategy of adding the hundreds, then tens, then units to help them.SubtractionUse the same strategies stated for addition to revise written and mental subtraction with 3 digits.MoneyPlease involve your child in counting money, laying out coins and notes of specific amounts and calculating change if possible. You could perhaps involve their pocket money, or what’s in their piggy bank, or someone’s purse or wallet?3d Shapes/2d ShapesGo on a 2D/3D shape hunt, write the names of the shapes you find, then make a table and record the number of faces, edges and vertices for each shape.TimeContinue to encourage your child to tell the time regularly on both analogue and digital clocks. Also ask your children simple time durations i.e. it is 10:15 just now what time will it be in 15 minutes? Half an hour? 1 hour?Helpful WebsitesThere are lots of brilliant resources to be found online for maths and numeracy. Please find below a list of websites the children could use to help them:Sumdog - is a website that provides a personalised maths game based programme for the children to complete and also allows teachers to set specific tasks for the children to work on. Usernames and passwords have been sent home.Initially, your child will be asked to complete a series of questions. Make sure they click to complete the maths questions (not spelling or reading) – they may go on for some time to allow the programme to gauge the correct level for your child. After the initial questions have been asked your child will be able to log on and complete games that will be based on their own level. In the event of an extended school closure they will also be able to see any tasks teachers may have set for them to complete too.RM Easimaths – available through Glow Launch PadRM Easimaths is another personalised game based maths programme and works in a very similar way to SumDog but it will allow for a bit of variety for the children. Easimaths will also self-adjust so if the questions are too easy it will realise this and gradually make them harder and if they are too tricky it will make them slightly easier. I would suggest having the sound on for this programme as instructions and explanations are spoken for the Marks - – Topmarks is a website that includes a variety of games that cover all areas of maths. The children should select the 7-11 years tab at the top of the Topmarks website page and then select the area of maths they want to practise from the menu below. At this point in time focus on revising the four concepts (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division), place value, ordering and comparing numbers, times tables, money and measures (focus on time). If your child is struggling with any area they could search for Jack Hartmann videos on YouTube to help explain the concept.
