** Control: 072803 **

Riders, please remember that the Iron Butt is a Rally, not a race. You are put on notice that all bonus locations and in many cases local police departments and/or park police near bonus locations have been notified of our approximate arrival time in their area.

____ Nevada Checkpoint information

____ Montana to Nevada bonus information

____ Score Sheet

____ Fuel Log

____ Ask Rallymaster if there are any changes or corrections

____ Before leaving the checkpoint, make sure you can find each

Bonus location and have a clear understanding of what is

required to earn the bonus.

WARNING: DO NOT LEAVE THE CHECKPOINT UNTIL YOU HAVE VERIFIED THAT ALL PAPERWORK IS IN YOUR RALLY PACKAGE. THIS IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY!

In order to be scored, you must present this bonus listing with score sheet and fuel log. You are free to tear apart and remove any pages that are not needed (for example, on page 10, you decide you will skip all the bonuses in South America, you may remove that page). However, if you lose a page from the bonus listing, you may not claim any bonuses on that page. If you lose the score sheet, it may be replaced at the next checkpoint but it will cause you to receive a 1,000-point penalty. If you lose the fuel log page, you will get no points for a fuel log.

IMPORTANT CAUTION: The following Potential Bonus locations are like a restaurant menu. If you order everything on the menu and eat it, you are going to get sick and perhaps die. Please pick and choose bonus destinations carefully!

NOTE: All times are local!

NOTE: Some GPS co-ordinates are provided in the rally. Please note that these are advisory in nature and approximate. The written instructions should always be followed. Where provided, the GPS format used is degrees and minutes with a fraction of a minute. This is one of the available formats for most GPS units.

REMEMBER: Unless otherwise specified, I.D. Flags are required in all photos.

When you are out there bonus hunting, remember, the bonus is not bagged until you complete the paperwork! Long Distance Rider Steve Asvitt has come up with this handy reminder:

Fuel Purchase Records 500 points

To obtain points for fuel purchase records, riders must submit a receipt for every fuel purchase with the following information on the receipt: 1) location (city/town and state), 2) date, 3) time, and 4) volume (gallons or liters) purchased.

If any of the required information is not printed on a receipt, it must be hand written on the receipt. Any error in the printed date should also be corrected by hand. (Errors in the printed time need not be corrected IF YOU ARE KEEPING A FUEL LOG.) Also write the telephone number of the station on the receipt if you correct an error other than a time error. Riders of motorcycles with a fuel capacity of 7.0 or more U.S. gallons also MUST complete the "fuel log" sheet provided at the previous checkpoint. The fuel log requires all of the same information as required on receipts plus the odometer reading and the correct time the purchase was made. Remember that no points for fuel purchase records will be awarded to any rider that refuels between checking in and starting the next leg.

Black Rock Desert

Search the Desert as directed by Joe Denton

Visit LD Riders list owner and Iron Butt Rally veteran Joe Denton at Bruno's Country Club in Gerlach, Nevada, the Mecca of long distance riding. Joe will either be at the restaurant or the bar.

Pick up a slip of paper from Joe containing the latitude and longitude of an object located north of Bruno's on the surface of the Black Rock Desert. Ask Joe to write the unique identification number of the object on your route sheet. Your task will be to find the object marked with your unique identification number and bring it to the checkpoint. The object will be small enough that you can slip it into a pocket or otherwise easily pack it on your bike. It should take you less than 30 minutes to complete this bonus.

At this time of the year, the surface of the Black Rock desert is usually covered with a hard crust that is easy to ride on using reasonable care. Joe will be able to give you directions for how to get to a convenient entry point for the Black Rock Desert that avoids any difficult terrain.

To find the object, you will almost certainly need a GPS. If you don't have your own GPS, Joe will have at least two GPS units available to loan, but you may have to wait for another rider to return with one of loaner GPS units. If you borrow a GPS from Joe and fail to return it before leaving the Gerlach area, you will be penalized 10,000 points.

Gerlach, Nevada is located approximately 77 miles north of Interstate 80 on NV-447. Bruno's Country Club is right on NV-447. From Winnemucca, Nevada, the shortest route to Gerlach is over Jungo Road, which begins about 1/4 mile north of I-80 on US 95. Jungo Road joins NV-447 just 3 miles south of Gerlach. It is approximately 100 miles from Winnemucca to Gerlach over Jungo Road. Some segments of Jungo Road are unpaved and of poor quality. If you want to use a better quality road, it is 211 miles from Winnemucca to Gerlach via I-80 to Fernley, Nevada, north on NV-427, and then north onNV-447.

Example Number 1: The bonus listing told you to go to the Madawaska Post Office and get an answer from a photo album. But when you got there, the album was missing, so you asked the postmaster to put a postmark on your bonus sheet and wrote a note that the photo album is no longer at the post office...

Example Number 2: The bonus listing states that the coal mine train in Ashland is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., but you arrived at 9:15 p.m. and managed to convince them to remain open and take you in the mine for your picture. You must disclose this fact now, or risk immediate disqualification from the rally.
