531 offers; 286 accept (~50% matriculation rate)No major shifts in GPA of admitted students; very small increase in MCAT scoreAcademic preparedness is the same as historicallyScholarshipsFundraising for scholarships is a high priorityDon’t have data split out by campus, in-state/out-of-stateAround 250 per year get some form of aid; 2017-18 saw 359 students received some scholarship fundingState fundingState general revenue fund (GRF) supplies some significant portion of our revenue; this has fallen and as a result student tuitions have risen to make up for the shortfallsome additional revenue coming from clinical facultyRate increases1.6% increase in the old structure for spring/fall rates, flat summer, same dollar amount for out of state students1.6% increase for students in the new structure for fall/spring/summer ratesFees and assessments are decided at the campus levelTVN: i expect any increase to be modest, 0-2%Open for general questions:Joe Geraghty: how has student input been accounted for in the list of purchases on slide 12?TVN: students participate on curricular committees, students self-organizing and making a casecould do a more formal/regular mechanism through the existing student gov structure - some sort of budgetary committeeShould be representativeJG: students have put together proposals (for example for UWorld subscriptions)The obstacle has been funding and budgetHow can we assure that if students are assembling well-thought-out proposals that these get more weight when deciding purchasesTVN: I don’t think we’ll ever arrive at a point where purchases are totally student-drivenBut this is done on a smaller scale for particular resource investmentswe can give a lot of weight to student input, but it does have to be a balanced against many voicesJoe Geraghty: if the college of medicine is increasing tuition, how is financial aid rising to meet this cost?Slide 12: fixed costs, UpToDate subscription; if students decide they can do without something will it avert cost increase?TVN: generally, yes, in this specific example of UpToDate - important for a large group of non-students as well; we’ve already decided that we will be renewing our subscriptionBob Freidel: Concern related to Slide 4: when students pay more early on, they have a larger principle that will accumulate interestConcern related to Slide 6: The loans that people leave medical school with is higher at UICOM than at private institutions because of more generous scholarship fundsHow do you see students/UMSC helping to increase the scholarship funds?TVN: how can students help “future generations?”We want to maintain relations with all of our graduating alumni and alumni are one of the big sources of donationsTVN: confirm, higher indebtedness at UICOM, also an unconfirmed phenomenon: students borrow maximum and it doesn’t keep pace with tuitionJonathan Jou:Tuition increases, could these drive student dissatisfaction and subsequent likelihood of alumni donationsTVN: we try to monitor the data for signals that we’re graduating disaffected students and haven’t seen that trend yetRely on student feedback for what needs fixingBob Freidel:Survey run about tuition and student perception472 respondents, 1-5 Likert on how likely they are to donate, mean was roughly 3Erik LiederbachTalking with alumni they certainly have monthly reminders of med school in the form of billWith 1.6% increase, what is the net total revenue increase for the College?TVN: $600,000On slide 12: this slide is “what are the incremental increases paying for”Students would love to see line-by-line breakdowns of purchasing plans and how these things benefit meEx. Anatomage tables, who is this accessible to; new humanities faculty - where will they be, what is their salary, what will they teach, etc.Do we have more details and costs of the items on the list?TVN: some items on the list are proposals, some are committed purchases; also to note: the costs of the total academic program is incrementally increasing with inflationOut-of-state students:pay ~2x what in-state students payWhat do out of state students pay at other Big 10 schools - not the same doublingWhat are your thoughts on holding out of state tuition for the long term?TVN: here are my personal thoughts on the issue:out-of-state sticker price is an outlier“fairness” by keeping increases the same across the student body; i would say that it’s more reasonable to ask the same of everyoneWho would be involved in the decision to hold out of state tuition at a constant amount?TVN: all the board of directorsIs the number of out of state students (or %) the same across campuses?Mason Marcus:Can we look at scholarship breakdown between in and out of state studentsTVN: we have that data, just have to cut itOther UpdatesLaunched a fundraising campaign for scholarship fundsStudent Town Halls would be welcome - the best way to coordinate it would be through UMSCTo Do:Find a town hall dateCompile an “FAQ” Share any questions and answers to all students to make sure they’re aware of the ongoing discussionDisseminate Dean Van Neck’s information to the studentsII. Site Reports from Regional Student Council PresidentsUrbana (Ari Pence, Petra Majdak, Olivia Cangellaris)Updates:The UMSG and the MSPAC will remain separate entities this year. We will work together to create a joint council this yearDean Ray’s visit on Monday, October 23 We are partnering with the Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS) to ?help from staff and students at the Ponce Health Sciences University in Puerto Rico by working with Illini Fighting Hunger group to hold a food packaging event. Our goal is to pack and ship over 600lbs of rice to the Ponce Health Sciences University. The GHHS sent out a plea to all GHHS members describing the ?severe shortages of food, water, and medical supplies following Hurricane Maria. Our colleagues in Ponce have specifically requested canned food, bottled water, water filters, water purifying tablets, rice, among other things and the Illini Fighting Hunger group has a surplus of rice available. The UICOM plans to bring both groups together to help those in need at Ponce Health Science University. The pilot was well received by students and faculty alike and has received approval to expand to all 6 core clerkships for this academic year. We have appointed M3 and M4 reps to serve in these role and they have received training in areas of program evaluation and feedback. These roles will give our students greater opportunities to directly collaborate with faculty to improve the M3 clerkship experience. Already from our pilot, improvements have been made to the Psychiatry and IM clerkships. We also began a USMLE Preparedness Committee (UPC) consisting of students, faculty and administrators to discuss ways we can better prepare our students for USMLE Step 1, Step 2 CK, and Step 2 CS. We are hoping to expand this committee to include all campuses and come up with a list of recommended resources, policies, and procedures that best serve our students when it comes to these examinations.Discussion:Peoria (Saleha Mallick and Ritika Singh)Updates: ISMS President Visit 10/18 → scheduling lunchtime presentation for M1/M2 students Celebration of Excellence event 10/26: SUCCESSFUL!Halloween Haunted House for Kids with DiabetesHelps serve as a meet-and-greet for families dealing with Pediatric diabetesThanksgiving Potluck 11/16Dialogue with Deans event 11/29: LCME AccreditationHoliday Party 12/9January Variety ShowAddiction medicine interest group launch: naloxone training event, 10 medical students and several community members trained. We worked through Dr. Aiyer in Peoria, who seemed to know most department heads and relevant administrators at UnityPoint.Get a list of the committee meeting times and locations from the hospital administration.Send to the student body, with the specialty interest groups serving as a clearinghouse for the respondents for their select specialty (i.e., all students interested in the Medicine Department’s monthly meetings should send a message of interest to the president of the Internal Medicine Interest Group). The student interest group leaders provide the list of interested students to the relevant department administrator. Those students are now free to attend every department meeting and develop a longitudinal relationship with the residents and attendings in that specialty. ?Treasurer (Stephanie Grach)Updates:Budget updates and reallocation of funds for leadership retreat travel have been going through (or at least I haven’t been notified otherwise...)Discussion: Historian/Webmaster (Petra Majdak)Updates: No new updates from me today :)Discussion:OSR Representative (Mason Marcus)Updates:AAMC 2017 MeetingResidency Preparedness/ERAS/NRMP report residency database: freida.ama-Caution with Freida data: submitted by the programs, not entirely dependableUSMLE (Step 1, Step 2 CK, Step 2 CS)WellnessIntegrated educational softwareCombining Benware with E-Value and other evaluation softwareLeonard Tow HumanismRespective student campus OSR reps will work to standardize the nomination form, decide on which faculty to present and ultimately vote during third meeting to allow for more time to prepare and put forward the best nominationStructural changes to selection process:Between 2nd and 3rd UMSC meeting, OSR reps will work with local ?government to generate nominations from standardized survey. Committee ReportsCCSP (prepared by Ashton Ballinger [R])Updates: Please be advised that the minutes of the CCSP meetings are confidential. During past meetings, members worked to ensure that students are progressing through the College of Medicine in accordance with our promotion policies. For students who fail to meet the promotion policies, we look at individual circumstances to see who is eligible for an exception to policy while ensuring equity for all other students. As such, we are addressing confidential student-specific issues. As always, CCSP would like to remind everyone that of utmost importance is engaging in communication with Student Affairs should any circumstance occur that would warrant discussion in our meetings. This can be due to a number of reasons including failures, medical illness, financial constraints, personal and/or family concerns, and need for increased study time, etc. If you or anyone you know is faced with any of these circumstances or if you are not sure your concern(s) meets any of these classifications, please speak with your campus Student Affairs department to devise a plan. Student Affairs can be quite helpful to you and staying in touch can really help your case should further discussions and decisions be warranted by CCSP.Discussion:Joe Geraghty: CCSP last year made a decision to change the deadline for STEP 1 notification - from 4 weeks prior to start of M3 to 6 weeks prior to start of M3That is very challenging - because dedicated study time (in Chicago) starts 6 weeks before start of M3Chicago students have major concerns about this changeJonathan Jou: All students have about 6 weeks of dedicated study time Students can’t be sure this early in the study period whether or not they’ll need to delayJoe: Very heavily enforced in Chicago, students called in to meet with academic advisors and faced serious consequences, including altered graduation dateWould encourage UMSC to send an email to Dr. Tim Murphy as to why this policy change was up in placeGrandfather in M2 classes?Dean Kashima:Problems arise when students don’t communicate at allThe purpose of the policies is to get people to come in earlier to speak to advisors about their concernsA policy that says that “students need to be in contact with Student Affairs prior to delaying”UMSC to bring that up to Dr. MurphyEvery student is uniqueCCIA (Joe Geraghty [C])Updates: The main focus of CCIA the last few months has been on the re-structure of the M3/M4 (now referred to as Phase 2 and 3) curriculum. The new Phase 2 will begin approximately 8 weeks earlier than currently, increasing the available time for electives, research, etc. Other changes that have been discussed have mainly been the lengths of certain clerkships - 8 or 12 weeks for internal medicine, 8 weeks for surgery, 4 weeks of neurology, and 6 weeks for other rotations (Psych, Family, Ob/Gyn, Peds). The changes to neurology and IM have sparked the most debate. Concerns with expanding neurology to 4 weeks at all campuses are discrepancies in department faculty and resources across the three campuses and readiness to expand to four weeks. For Internal Medicine, the concern of cutting down to 8 weeks was removal of 4 weeks of outpatient ambulatory medicine (will now only be 8 weeks inpatient) (for at least the next 2 years, outpatient was cut because of some overlap with FM). The decision made on November 1 at CCIA was to move forward with 8 weeks for IM, 4 weeks neurology, and all other lengths listed above. (In effect this year, Class of 2020) However, a commitment was made to keep this structure in place only for the next two years, and that along the way robust program evaluation will occur involving administration, faculty, clerkship directors, and Student Curricular Board (SCB) representatives to evaluate these clerkships, paying particular attention to Internal Medicine and potential need for more ambulatory/primary care experience in the third-year. Other topics include how to include a synthesis component into M3/M4, integrating basic science into the clinical experience, and more. Discussion:Student favorite: 8 week integrated primary care clerkship with FM and IM; faculty felt it would be too logistically difficult to plan and execute in 6 monthsAssessment for clerkshipsEM clerkship commentsNo dedicated EM time in the clerkship schedule, possible formal 4 week elective in the 3rd year in which they can explore EMNeurology was another high priority, that has been integrated into the clerkship scheduleCCA (Amer Rasheed [R])Updates:The CCA deals with confidential applicant information. We are continuing to review student applications, interview students, and admit students according to CCA policy. Please be sure to sign up for opportunities at your campus to interview possible candidates. This is a really important task as these students will be not only our colleagues at the COM but also in medicine.Discussion:Dean Kashima:Second look days will always be in the month of AprilTo do:share information on second look day dates and share with UMSCCCSAS Updates: No budget decision has been reached yet on how many scholarships will be offered, so no meetings have been scheduled either at this time. ?(Hailey Sellek) Rockford has put out a survey to the campus assessing interest/thoughts on scholarships and awards, can be viewed here (DO NOT fill out if you are not a Rockford student): Discussion:FEC Updates: N/ADiscussion:HPSC (Matt Schaeffer and Blair Wright)Updates:Meetings on 9/28 and 10/26 for introductions and voting on project and travel grants. No word yet on student fee disbursement to Peoria and Rockford.Travel grant applications are accepted on a first come first serve basis until we hit the max amount of funding allocated for that quarter.
