Texas Private Schools Football Championships

Texas Private Schools Football Championships

Private schools are barred from participation in

the University Interscholastic League (UIL), which

was made up of public schools exclusively until 2003

when Dallas Jesuit and Strake Jesuit of Houston were

admitted. The two schools, which had been part of the

TCIL (see following) until 2000, were forced into independent status when the TCIL ceased operations and

TAPPS, made up of mostly smaller schools, would not

allow admittance to their league because of the large

size of the two schools.

The UIL in 2003 altered its provisions for membership for private schools with several stipulations,

including that a private school must not qualify for

membership in organizations similar to the UIL, thereby allowing for the admission of the Dallas Jesuit and

Strake Jesuit only.

TCIL/TAPPS

Gary Kubiak, former head

ooach of the Houston

Texans, is one of the

athletes to come out of

the football programs of

Texas¡¯ private and parochial

schools. Kubiak was

quarterback for Houston St.

Pius 1975¨C1978.

He went on to play for

Texas A&M and in the NFL.

TCIL: Texas Christian Interscholastic League

The TCIL was organized as the Texas Catholic Interscholastic League in 1935 when St. Mary¡¯s University in

San Antonio was asked to sponsor a boys¡¯s basketball

tournament for private Catholic schools.

Other boys¡¯ sports have been added thorugh the

years, and girls¡¯ competition was initiated in 1971.

The name of the organization was changed to Texas

Christian Interscholastic League in 1976 when nonCatholic schools joined. In 1999-2000, the TCIL ceased

to exist and most schools joined the Texas Association of

Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS).
