Key Information

• The procedure time will be approximately 20-40 minutes for the endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)

• The arrival time will be confirmed with you 1-2 days beforehand by the hospital. Allow 2-3 hours from your arrival time before you will be ready to go home and ensure you have someone to drive you home afterwards

• On the day your doctor will see you before and after the procedure to discuss the results

• You will receive a hard copy of the report. The report and all results will also be sent to your GP

EUS Preparation Instructions

• DIET:

o For the EUS your stomach must be empty (to be safe and for good views)

o You should have nothing to eat for six hours before your admission time

o You can drink CLEAR FLUIDS only until 2 hours before your admission time.   

o CLEAR FLUIDS are: water, soda water, mineral water, cordial, sports drinks (not red/purple/blue), lemonade, apple juice (no pulp), black coffee/tea, clear soup (e.g. clear chicken broth)

• MEDICATION:

o If you take Insulin or blood thinning medications, please seek advice at least 10 days prior to the procedure

o Aspirin can be continued. Oral diabetic medications should be withheld on the day of the procedure. They may be restarted after the procedure is complete when you return to eating.

What is an EUS?

EUS is a procedure using a thin flexible endoscope with an ultrasound probe and a camera on it’s tip. The procedure is performed with sedation and most people will not remember the procedure. The EUS endoscope is passed via the mouth to the oesophagus, stomach and the first part of the small intestine. It allows the lining of the upper gut and some abdominal organs to be viewed with good quality ultrasound from inside the body. This allows for the diagnosis, needle biopsy and treatment of several conditions including the liver and bile duct (drainage tube), pancreas, gallbladder, lymph nodes and blood vessels.

Is EUS safe? EUS is a safe and generally well-tolerated procedure. You may feel minor throat discomfort or temporary bloating afterwards. Occasionally there may be nausea or light-headedness following the anaesthetic. Complications are rare, but may include:
