Parents and Guardians of 8th Grade History,My name is Kevin Read, and I am your 8th grader’s United States History Teacher. This is my first newsletter of the 2017-2018 school year. In the future, I usually send these out on Friday afternoons at a weekly or biweekly rate. We are now entering the fourth week of the school year so I have a lot of information to share. To start the school year, students introduced themselves by creating and presenting maps of the United States that were shaded according to states they went to this summer, states they have been to before and states that they have never been to. Following this map activity and analysis, we began our study of United States history with a brief overview of Native American tribes and early European exploration of North America. Classes have studied the early British settlements of Roanoke, Jamestown, Plymouth, as well as the colonies of New England. We have looked at excerpts from primary source documents including the Virginia Charter of 1606, the Mayflower Compact, and the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut.A couple weeks ago, students took their first assessment of the year, a states and capitals quiz. I returned quizzes today and classes will be taking the quiz again on Wednesday October 11. I will take each student’s highest score, regardless of whether that score came in the first attempt or second. Besides the obvious benefit of raising grades, having an understanding of where states are is a critical part to understanding this country’s early history, so I don’t mind the continued emphasis. Students have multiple resources to study with including a packet of notes, their agendas, a trivia website called sporcle (that I spent way too much time on in college), and their old quizzes.Today I passed out a handout with information on how to access . Remind is great way for me to make announcements regarding upcoming assignments, assessments, or materials to bring to class. Alerts can be set to arrive as either a text or email. I encourage students to signup, but they are not required to. You are also welcome to sign up for notifications. As I explained in my handout home (apologies for saying 8th grade English), Remind is not a substitute for agenda usage and students are required to bring their agendas daily to write down homework and use as a hall pass. Please see the end of this newsletter for a copy of the instructions I printed off. Also, my website is now updated. I will post assignments with links to the electronic copy for ease of access from home as well as newsletters, links, and various projects.Lastly, the district is switching to gmail and other Google functions. Email sent to my old address should automatically get sent to my new account, but for your record my new email address is kread@Thanks for reading through this longer than normal introduction.
