LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS) is committed to providing culturally sensitive services of the highest quality to international students and scholars. We are proud that the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign ranks 2nd amongst US public institutions hosting international students (5th overall) and 12th for scholars, rankings that demonstrate the university's ongoing commitment to international education. We happily share the statistics contained in this report for informational purposes, but we want to emphasize that the international education efforts on campus go far beyond impressive attendance numbers. Since creating the first ever international student advisor position at a US school back in 1907, the University of Illinois has spent over a century at the forefront of this field, and ISSS continues that work by not only being the primary point of contact for all matters related to immigration status at the university, but also by being advocates for our international population and providing social and educational programming throughout the year.

The UIUC welcomed a record 3,259 new international students to campus this fall. The top three countries represented were China (1,683), India (388) and South Korea (304) accounting for 73% of our new student population. New graduate degree students outnumbered new undergraduate degree students this year, with 1,411 (51%) and 1,397 (49%), respectively. Incoming freshmen were still the largest single group, numbering 1,793. We also welcomed 431 non-degree and professional students to campus this year.

The number of enrolled international students is also at an all-time high of 10,545, an increase of 3.3% from Fall 2015. Graduate degree students account for approximately 47% (5,091) of the international enrollment, and comprise 10% of the overall student population at the UIUC. Undergraduate degree students make up 52% (5,449) of the international student enrollment, and 16% of the overall UIUC undergraduate student population. In total, international students comprise 23.5% of the student body at the UIUC.

Our students represent 113 countries, with 86% coming from Asia. The top five countries of origin are: China (5,629), India (1,277), South Korea (1,105), Taiwan (320), and Indonesia (141). From July 2015 through June 2016, the UIUC welcomed 1,076 international faculty and staff to its campus. 31% were working and researching in Liberal Arts and Sciences, followed by 25% in Engineering and another 18% in Administration. The most represented country was China, with 328 faculty and staff, followed by India (149), South Korea (116), Brazil (62) and Canada (42).

ISSS is honored to serve so many talented international students, faculty and staff at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and we look forward to continue to work with this special group of people in the upcoming year.
