COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course provides an advanced understanding of concepts in human physiology and pathophysiology as a foundation for the advanced nursing practice role. Concepts related to biological sciences including cell biology, tumor biology, immunology, genetics, and pathology will be presented. The focus of this course is on principles, theories, and current research related to physiological and pathophysiological system alterations across the lifespan.

COURSE OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

1. Integrate knowledge from the physical, biological, and social sciences to understand human physiological functioning across the lifespan.

2. Analyze the relationships between normal physiological processes and pathophysiological processes across the lifespan.

3. Explain the etiology, at-risk populations, pathogenesis morphology, and clinical and diagnostics manifestations of selected acute and chronic disease states.

4. Apply self-learning principles in the advanced practice role in integrating current research-based findings to understand etiology, pathogenesis and morphological alterations of selected acute and chronic disease states.

5. Relate underlying physiological and/or pathophysiological alterations to health assessments findings.

COURSE SCHEDULE This is a web- based course with no scheduled class meetings.

Midterm Exam October 13, 14, or 15, 2014 0900-2300 using Proctor U

Final Exam December 15, 16, or 17, 2014 0900-2300 using Proctor U

ATTENDANCE

Students are expected to participate in the activities and discussions as listed in the course syllabus and on the course web-site. Timeframes for the posting and receiving of materials are listed in the course materials on the course web-site. A grade penalty may be assigned for late assignments or make-up exams.

ProctorU Information:

o Major course examinations will be administered via ProctorU, a live proctoring service, to ensure a secure testing environment.

o Each student computer must be in compliance with Policy S1.04, Student Computer Policy and must contain a web cam, microphone, and speakers.

o Each examination will cost $22.50 per exam.

o Students go to the website and click on “How To Get Started”. This will permit students to create an account and test out their system.

o Once an instructor makes an exam available, students go online to ProctorU to schedule and pay for the exam session. Students must provide a valid email address and phone number where they can be reached during an exam.

o CON IT Support office will oversee this process and provide technical assistance.

ACCOMMODATIONS DUE TO DISABILITY

Each semester, students are responsible for requesting a memorandum from the Disability Resource Center () to notify faculty of their requested individual accommodations. This should be done at the start of the semester.
