STUDENT FUNDING APPLICATION

(Deadline for receiving all application materials is February 1, unless otherwise noted.)

Instructions: Please complete this application and send the supporting materials to be considered for any and all fellowships listed below. Note specific instructions for applying for different types of fellowship support. If you would like to be considered for more than one category of funding, only one application is required, but please make sure that your statement and materials meet all the requirements of each category. For application purposes, you are welcome to discuss more than one plan for the same period of study.

Types of Awards:

A. CCS Endowment Awards 1. General academic support for MA and PhD students: A limited number of awards of varying amounts are made based on academic merit and may be used to support academic pursuits related to the students' degree programs.

Eligibility/Requirements: All graduate students in Chinese studies at the University of Michigan, regardless of citizenship, are eligible to apply; Applicants must submit the CCS Funding Application and the required materials indicated on the application.

2. Funding for MA Students a. Dual-Degree Students: $10,000 per term for any student in a CCS-approved dual-degree program who takes two or more Chinese-studies courses in the funded term.

Eligibility/Requirements: Incoming students must be admitted by both programs and must matriculate into both programs; current dual-degree students must be in good academic standing; Recipients of this funding must enroll full time and take two or more Chinese-studies courses in the funded term; Incoming students must submit the CCS Funding Application and the required materials indicated on the application; returning dual-degree students seeking no other awards only need to fill out the primary information portion of the application.

b. Second-Year Award: Full tuition and a $10,000 stipend for the academic year, based on outstanding first-year performance including substantial progress in thesis preparation.

Eligibility/Requirements: Applicants must be of good academic standing and have completed their first year of the MA program as full-time students; Applicants must submit the CCS Funding Application, the required materials indicated on the application, as well as a 10-page thesis prospectus with a timeline for completion; at least one of the recommendation letters must discuss likelihood of thesis completion.

c. Off-Campus Fieldwork/Archival Research: This $5,000 award, renewable once, is offered in support of substantial off-campus field/archival research as part of the applicant's thesis work.

Applicants must be of good academic standing and have completed at least two terms in the MA program;

Applicants must submit the CCS Funding Application and the required materials indicated on the application;

February 1 deadline for research starting the following Fall; and November 1 deadline for research starting the following Winter.

d. Internship Grant: Awards of up to $2,500 to support China-related internships at public or private institutions around the world.

Eligibility/Requirements: Applicants must be of good academic standing and have completed at least two terms in the MA program; Applicants must submit the CCS Funding Application and the required materials indicated on the application; Rolling deadline Recipients must successfully complete the funded internships and submit to CCS a 2-page report on the experience.

3. Field and archival research funding for PhD students a. Fieldwork/archival research grant (including preparatory): Up to $15,000, renewable once; two offered per year. International students are especially encouraged to apply.

Eligibility/Requirements: Doctoral students in good standing seeking funding for dissertation fieldwork or other types of off-campus research; Applicants must submit a 10-page (maximum) research prospectus in addition to the CCS Funding Application and the required materials indicated on the application.

b. Preparatory field/archival research grant: Up to $5,000, renewable once; three offered per year. Designed to support preparatory work yearround and/or to cover more than one summer, this grant is intended for U.S. and international students in need of preparatory field/archival work before they attain candidacy.

Eligibility/Requirements: Pre-candidate doctoral students only; Applicants must submit a 3-page research proposal in addition to the CCS Funding Application and the required materials indicated on the application; Deadlines: November 15 and March 15

B. International Institute Language Fellowship (IILF) A limited number of awards are available for graduate students engaged in the study of Chinese or Tibetan in the academic year. This award provides tuition and a monthly stipend for the academic year.

Eligibility/Requirements: Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and must enroll in Chinese or Tibetan language courses during Fall Term and Winter Term of the same academic year;

C. The Peking-American School Fellowship in Traditional Chinese Studies Through a generous donation by the Peking-American School alumni group in 1978, CCS founded the Peking-American School Fellowship to support traditional Chinese studies at the University of Michigan.

Eligibility/Requirements: All U-M graduate students in Chinese humanistic studies are eligible to apply for this meritbased award; Applicants must submit the CCS Funding Application and the required materials indicated on the application.

D. Katherine Taylor Fellowship A study-abroad funding opportunity, the Katherine Taylor Fellowship provides funds for U-M graduate students for up to a full year of research and language study in a Chinese speaking environment. Preference is given to students who have not had extensive direct exposure to Chinese society.

Eligibility/Requirements: Applicants must have begun graduate work related to China and have completed at least one year of Chinese language study; Awardees live and study in China or Taiwan for at least an academic year in such a way as to immerse themselves in the Chinese language and culture; Awardees are expected to return to the University of Michigan to continue their graduate studies after their time abroad; Applicants must submit the CCS Funding Application and the required materials indicated on the application.

E. PRC Chinese Language Fellowships A language fellowship funded by the China Scholarship Council of the People's Republic of China, this opportunity to study in the PRC provides tuition and registration fees, accommodations, basic learning materials, the same medical care as Chinese students, and a small monthly stipend of RMB1,100 (approx. US$160). CCS will provide an additional US$2,000 toward travel. The recipient is able to choose from a variety of different institutions in China, and may hold a fellowship for either the academic year or for a shorter period. Previous knowledge of Chinese is not necessary.

Eligibility/Requirements: Applicants must be a graduate or advanced undergraduate student in Chinese studies at the University of Michigan; Applicants must have enrolled at the University of Michigan for at least one term prior to acceptance of the award; Applicants must submit the CCS Funding Application and the required materials indicated on the application.

Note: All students receiving funding to go abroad must have international health insurance. The cost is $1/day currently. Please figure this cost into your budget.
