General history of Midtown

X Plans for building Midtown began in the 19th Century, after a fire destroyed a large area of Detroit in 1805.

X However, it wasn't until the 1860's, during the Civil War, that development truly began in Midtown. The downtown Detroit area was slowly becoming more oriented towards business and industry, so plans were made to turn Midtown into a residential sector for well-to-do families.

X The area flourished, and during the 20th century there was a push to make Midtown a central hub of culture in Detroit. Buildings like the Orchestra Hall, the Institute of Arts, and the Detroit Public Library were all built in this time.

X When the Great Depression came, however, it hit Midtown hard. Industry moved from the city to the suburbs, and with it took many of the affluent families who lived in the Midtown area. The houses and mansions they left behind were modified into apartments.

X Wayne State rose to prominence during this time, when they took some of these abandoned houses and appropriated them as lecture halls and other college buildings.
