Fred Cherry was a

faithful member of

our congregation

and greatly valued

his years on the

church¡¯s Board of

Trustees. He recognized that the

church facilities

are

some of our

Dr. Lynne Settlemyre

most

valuable

Pastor

tools for ministry

and witness. It was his love for our church

and his dedication to improving and maintaining our church home that moved his

daughter, Carol, to donate his home and

its contents, along with his pick-up truck,

to the church upon his passing in 2007.

She also donated her father¡¯s extensive

assortment of tools to the Carpenter¡¯s

Hands. Due to his love for our church and

his daughter¡¯s generosity, many people

have been blessed.

The church conducted an estate sale and

sold the Cherry home on Persimmon, as

well as his pick-up. This resulted in a total

gift exceeding $140,000. With those

funds, we installed the Chapel parking lot

in 2010. A few years later we installed a

security system that still protects our SLP

students and church staff.

Volume 49, Issue 5

The love and generosity of the Cherry

family quite literally made possible those

necessary improvements to our church

home.

Today, just over $44,000 of the Cherry

gift remains. We contacted Carol Cherry

and told her of our Place of Grace

campaign. She agreed that it would be a

fitting use of the Cherry gift to help fund

Place of Grace projects. She wrote, ¡°I am

glad to know the funds are still benefitting

the church my parents loved so much.¡±

The love and generosity of the Cherry

family illustrates how our love and

generosity can live on long after we pass

on to glory. You too can do this in various

ways. For instance you can designate a

bequest in your will, or make the church a

beneficiary of an insurance policy, or

make a contribution to the church¡¯s

endowment. These sorts of gifts can be

used for most any purpose you designate

or you can leave it up to the church to

decide.

Leaving a legacy through the church is a

meaningful way to help make disciples of

Jesus Christ for the transformation of the

world. Contact the church office for more

information.

CHILDREN & FAMILY MINISTRY

Hi all! Can you believe it is already May¡

¡°Dear children, let's not merely say that

end of School, graduation, VBS

we love each other; let us show the truth

preparations, summer vacation planning,

by our actions.¡± 1 John 3:18

etc..?

HAPPY MOTHER¡¯S DAY to all!

However, the most important day this

Many Blessings,

month is Mother¡¯s Day. The first Mother¡¯s

Day was celebrated in West Virginia in

1912.

Mothers were to be recognized as an

important part of our culture and lives.

Mothers love their children during the

worst and best of times, their heart is like

a rare jewel.

God created families, giving mothers a

special place in that unit. Mothers can

love, wash clothes, cook, clean and be a

master of all aches. Our children need

that unselfish love of a mother. Our

children need to see their mothers love

God through their actions and words.

Children¡¯s love for God starts at home.

Mothers make up an important part of our

lives. So whether it is a card, candy, hug,

or a kiss, we should show we care. It is

so important to give our love to these

dedicated women in our lives and not take

them for granted.
