Resident Eligibility and Selection Policy

Pediatric Residency Program

This policy contains additional information in addition to all components of UTCOM policy HSC-COM-09-019-00

POLICY:

The Pediatric Residency Education program must select individuals appropriately qualified

to enter and complete a graduate medical education curriculum.

PURPOSE:

This policy will ensure fair and equitable selection of qualified physicians to enter into Pediatric

training at The University of Toledo (UT).

PROCEDURE:

Resident Eligibility:

Applicants with one of the following qualifications are eligible for appointment to UT residency programs:

· Graduates of medical schools in the US and Canada accredited by the Liaison Committee

on Medical Education (LCME).

a. Candidates must have taken and passed USMLE Step 2CK and Step 2CS

prior to graduation from medical school.

· Graduates of schools of osteopathic medicine in the US, accredited by the American

Osteopathic Association (AOA).

· Graduates of medical schools outside the US and Canada who meet one of the following

qualifications:

a. Have received a currently valid certificate from the Educational Commission

for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG), or;

b. Have a full and unrestricted license or training certificate to practice

medicine in the state of Ohio.

c. Additionally, preference will be given to those who:

1. Have graduated from medical school within the last 5 years

2. Have at least a score of 200 on USMLE parts I and II on the first attempt

3. Have at least one year clinical experience in the United States

· Graduates of medical schools outside the US who have completed a Fifth Pathway

program provided by an LCME-accredited medical school.

Resident Selection:

· The UT Pediatric Residency Program selects from among eligible applicants on the

basis of their preparedness and ability to benefit from the program to which they are

appointed. Aptitude, academic credentials, personal characteristics and ability to

communicate are considered in the selection. The Graduate Medical Education

Committee and Graduate Medical Education programs have as their policy to consider all

candidates for graduate medical education regardless of race, sex, creed, nationality, or

sexual orientation. Performance in medical school, personal letters of recommendation,

achievements, humanistic qualities, and qualities thought important to the desired

specialty will be used in the selection process.

· The Pediatric Residency Program participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) in

selecting residents. Out of match positions are not available.
