The search for a building to house the collections and establish the organization as a central part of the City of Oneonta began in earnest. A three-story building was purchased on the corner of Main and Dietz Streets, and the hired architect began drawings for the renovation of the first floor. The Board of Trustees named the building the History Center, and the grand opening took place June 20, 2005. The Greater Oneonta Historical Society not only has remained active over the past ten years in collections development, programs and outreach, but has increased its membership, budget, and community involvement many times over. The first floor of the History Center includes a large museum area with frequently changing exhibitions, as well as an extensive gift shop. The second floor houses the historical collections – both arts/artifacts and archival material – a library, a reading/research room, and the Collections Manager's office. Architectural plans for the third floor of the building are underway to restore the large, historic ballroom to accommodate dances and special events.
