Dr. Carpenter Achieves International Recognition

Dr. Kenneth Carpenter, the USU Eastern Prehistoric Museum director and

Renowned Paleontologist has received international acclaim by receiving the UniBio Press Award for palentological research.

The UniBio Press is a non-profit organization that distributes biology-oriented academic journals including The Palentological Research, and the Journal of Palentological Society of Japan. The “UniBio Press Award” is given each year for each journal to the authors who produce the most frequently accessed

paper among all the papers published in the previous year.

Dr. Carpenter’s paper entitled “Variation in a Population of Theropoda (Dinosauria): Allosaurus from the Cleveland-Lloyd Quarry (Upper Jurassic, Utah, USA” (Paleontological Research), vol.14, no.4 pp. 250-259. December 31 2010 met this criterion for the award.

Congratulations to Dr. Carpenter!

First Combined CVAS-UFOP Meeting

The next CVAS meeting will be with the UFOP chapter and will held be on Thursday February 16, 2012 in the upstairs classroom at the USU Eastern Prehistoric Museum. The guest speaker will be Dr. Kenneth Carpenter. His lecture is entitled “Why We Need a New Museum”

The UFOP business meeting will begin at 6:30pm. All CVAS members are welcome to attend this meeting. The Castle Valley Chapter (CVAS) business meeting will begin at 7:00pm. The lecture will begin shortly after that business meeting.

January CVAS Meeting

On Thursday January 19, the guest speaker was Grant Smith; he is the USDA/National Recourses Conservation Service Archaeologist and a new member of CVAS. He was also a guest speaker last fall

His lecture “Newest Discoveries from the Promontory Caves” drew such interest that all of sixteen people who attended kept him long after the lecture to answer several questions about the exciting finds that were found in the caves.

He promised to return to tell the group about other future discoveries in the Promontory Caves.

CVAS Vice-President Elected

A Vice-President has finally been elected to serve as the CVAS Vice-President. At the January 19, 2012 meeting Heidi Essex, a new member of CVAS volunteered to serve as the 2012 Vice-President. Heidi is a full-time student at USU Eastern majoring in secondary education and history with a minor in anthropology. She enjoys archaeology and all other aspects of anthropology.

A motion was made to elect her the CVAS Vice-President, it was seconded and she was unanimously elected. CVAS members are thankful to Heidi Essex for stepping up and being involved in the mission to preserve the past for the future.
