Keynote Speaker: Environment

Jeremy Rifkin is president of the Foundation on Economic Trends and the author of seventeen bestselling books on the impact of scientific and technological changes on

the economy, the workforce, society, and the environment. His books have been translated into more than thirty languages and are used in thousands of universities,

corporations and government agencies around the world. His most recent books include The Empathic Civilization, The Hydrogen Economy, The European Dream, The End of

Work, The Age of Access, and The Biotech Century.

He has been a frequent guest on numerous television programs, including Face the Nation, The Lehrer News Hour, 20/20, Larry King Live, Today, and Good Morning America.

The National Journal named Rifkin as one of 150 people in the U.S. that have the most influence in shaping federal government policy.   more ...

Keynote Speaker: Health Care

Dr. Pappachan E. Kolattukudy Director, Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences

This laboratory is involved in several research areas. The genomic and molecular basis of pathogen interaction with their hosts is one area. Mycobacterium

tuberculosis, the causative agent of tuberculosis, a major human disease that accounts for than one quarter of all preventable adult deaths, has acquired multidrug

resistance making discovery of new drug targets a critical need. The high content of unique complex lipids in the cell walls of this organism helps the pathogen evade

the host defenses and antimycobacterial drugs. Synthesis of these lipids offer potential new targets. We are investigating the mycobacterial genes involved in

pathogenesis, using gene knock out and other molecular and cell biological approaches.

Molecular mechanisms involved in the development of cardiovascular disease is another area. The role of chemokine-induced gene expression changes involved in the

development of cardiovascular diseases is being elucidated with transgenic animals and gene-chip technology. A novel cell death-inducing gene was recently discovered

in this laboratory. How this gene product is involved in cardiovascular disease is being elucidated using molecular and cell biological approaches.

Gene knock-out approaches in mice are being used to elucidate the functions of collapsin response mediator proteins (CRMPs), a class of cytoplasmic proteins possibly

involved in axonal guidance.   more ...
