The Future Perfect

2009-2010.

1-Preparation:

*Review the simple future and the present perfect.

*Let students see the relation between the present (now) and the present perfect, this will help them to see the relation between the future simple and the future perfect.

*You may want to refer briefly to the relation between the past simple and the past perfect.

2-Consciousness raising: Reading comprehension tasks.

Read the text and answer these questions:

1- What is Brahim’s job? He is ………………………………………………………………………….

2- What is he studying now?.......................................................................................................................

3- When is he going to finish his university studies? He…………………………………………………………………….

(at this stage try to elicit the future perfect from students/Don’t force it out ,but try…)

4- Has Brahim got his license degree now? ........................................................................................................................................

5- When will he get it? .............................................................................................................................................................

3-presentation:

✓ Notice the verbs in bold type and try to understand :(students spot the verbs).

✓ What is the form of these verbs? S+………………………………………………………………………..

✓ Try to understand when we use this tense. (help students with the examples in the text to see the use of the fut. perf.)

✓ At this stage you give an explicit presentation so that you clear up students’ misunderstanding of the use of the fut. perfect.-----------use other examples preferably concrete real ones like:

❖ By the end of 2010,Morocco will have hosted 10million tourists.

❖ By next May we will have finished the English program .

❖ In 6 months’ time, you will have got your bac. Etc (these are my eg. Use others)

Make sure that you have presented the different uses of the fut. perfect before you go to exercises.

4- practice:Use the tasks on student’s book Gateway2 page 69.

And on ticket 2 page 40.You have also other exercises on this blog if you can make copies for the students.

This is the best time to introduce the fut perfect continuous.

Use in the exercises two or three examples in which students can use the fut perf simple and also the fut perf cont.and when you are correcting the ex ;introduce the progressive form.For ex:

By the end of this month, I (teach)…………………………………………………….in Tetouan for 4 months.

By the end of this year,I (learn) ………………………………………………………English for 4years. Etc these are examples.

5-application:

Have the students prepare dialogues/personalized sentences in which they use the new tense.

Look .this is a modified lesson plan of what I used with my students in this lesson. So modify it depending on your and your learners’ needs.

Dear Lamiae.

I am writing this letter to tell you about how my life will be in the next coming months. I am now at University doing my last year at the department of English. I have got a lot of work so I will not write to you again until the end of May. By that time, I will have finished my university studies. I suppose that by the end of May, I will have obtained (got) my license in English.

I have stared studying English in the year in 2007, so in 5 months’ time, I will have completed my 3rd year of learning English. It’s not an easy job to be a student. I work a lot. Now I am very tired. I hope I will have relaxed when I meet you next June. I am also working on my research paper now. I will have written almost 150 pages by the end of January 2010.So take care of yourself. I hope you will have learnt enough English by the time we meet so that we can use it in our communication.
