Executive Summary

The City of Chesapeake continues to remain a fundamental component of Greater Hampton Roads and, overall, presents itself as a safe, attractive and prosperous community. In the 2018 Life in Hampton Roads report, over 88% of respondents from Chesapeake rated the quality of life in their city as good or excellent.1 With a population of just over 241,000 and a median age of 36, Chesapeake residents enjoy a high rate of homeownership. Unemployment is low ? below 3% - and job opportunities continue to grow annually. In 2018, health care and social services is ranked #2 as top industries in the city, followed by professional, scientific and technical services.2 Household median income is also high, lending to a robust tax base to invest in education, roads, parks and more.
