Significant Accomplishments:

17 Jan: Bill Holt discussed the History Bowl which is February 9, 2012. Bill made a motion to participate in the History Bowl again this year. The motion was seconded and passed. The motion also included a $200.00 entry fee. Those volunteering to participate in the History Bowl are Bill Holt, John Debman, Lee Porter, Curt Stiles, and alternates are Gene Funderburk, Russ Holt, Bob Avent and Jim Williams. 

The official name of the chapter was changed on the chapter constitution to The Lower Cape Fear Chapter of the National Society of the Sons of the American, Inc. by a motion and vote.

Gene Funderburk explained the capability of members to obtain shirts with the Lower Cape Fear name and SAR logo from the Queensboro Company of Wilmington.

14 August:

The Lower Cape Fear Chapter of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, Inc. had $4,481.61 in the operating checking account. All known invoices have been paid.

There were 43 compatriots and guests at the Independence Day celebration on June 30, 2012. Revenue was $344.00 and expenses were $161.41 for a profit of $182.59.

The Chapter received $307.79 from the NC Department of Revenue for refund of Sales and Use Tax for the period of January 1, 2012 to June 30, 2012. $300.78 was Sales and Use Tax from expenses associated with the NCSSAR convention. 

A motion was made by Compatriot John Thornhill that the chapter award $250.00 to the chapter winner of the Enhanced JROTC cadet contest, the Eagle Scout Scholarship Contest, the Oration contest and the essay contest. Compatriot Bill Holt seconded the motion; the motion carried unanimously.

A motion was made by Compatriot John Thornhill that the chapter award $150.00 to the award winner of the Elementary School poster contest and $100.00 to the classroom teacher of the chapter winner. Compatriot Bill Holt seconded the motion. The motion carried unanimously.

Compatriot Gene Funderburk made a motion to purchase a 50-star US Flag and a NC State Flag to be added to the chapter flag inventory. Compatriot Charles Lewis seconded the motion. The motion carried unanimously.

Compatriot Gene Funderburk presented a “Bennington Flag” given to the chapter by American Legion Post 10.

Compatriot Gary Green presented two flag cases hand made by Julianne Green to replace the cases that have worn out.

27 October:

The chapter added a Speaker’s bureau on the Chapter Web Site.

As of December 5, 2012, The Lower Cape Fear Chapter of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, Inc. had $5,185.68 in the operating checking account. The chapter owes NCSSAR and NSSAR $2,148.00 for 2013 dues.

The Compatriot Charles H. Davis CD fund for $1,512.68 matured September 15, 2012. This fund is restricted for grave markings. The scholarship fund for $1,746.18 CD matured September 15, 2012.

The chapter finance committee recommended that the two funds above be placed in the Vanguard GNMA Fund. For more information go to "Vanguard GNMA Fund Investor Shares." Go to  for fund performance. The account was opened on November 7, 2012.
