From the Pastor’s Keyboard

Father’s day is June 20, and it has been my habit to encourage men through sermons and the written word to be better husbands on the occasion that marks their special day. I have done the same thing on Mother’s day because I have always felt as a group; men need more direction then women.

This year I came across an article in Revive Magazine that has challenged me to widen my view point…30-Day Husband Encouragement Challenge, by Nancy Leigh DeMoss. In her article she poses the question of what changes would come about in our marriages if a mother/wife spent 30 days consciously encouraging her husband. Here's how it works:

1. For the next 30 days, commit to say nothing negative about your husband—not to him, and not to anyone else about him.

2. Every day for the next 30 days, tell your husband something that you appreciate about him; then tell someone else about it.

The countless responses we've received from women who have taken this challenge illustrate the power of affirmation and encouragement:

• We've been married for 43 years, and our marriage was dormant. I didn't think anything could revive it. I was wrong. This challenge has made a huge improvement in our relationship.

• This hasn't been easy going for me. There's a lot of hurt and anger and resentment toward my husband to overcome. But you have encouraged me to remember why I fell in love with this guy, what was so special about him. You've given me hope for my marriage. I may not be able to change my husband, but I can change my heart and my attitude toward him with God's help. My husband is talking to me more—really talking from his heart. We still have a long way to go, but it is working. Every day gets a little easier, and some of that anger and resentment is fading away. I married a great man. I have just forgotten to nurture him in the day-to-day busyness of our lives. I love my husband.

• I am realizing that by me being so negative, I was the main source of the tension and stress in the house. Now that I am encouraging and expressing love, my husband has expressed, verbally and by his actions, how in love with me he is. Thank you for creating this challenge. It is a struggle sometimes, but worth the fight.

• I never thought in a million years that such simple words could have such a profound effect on our relationship.

• I began the 30-Day Husband Encouragement Challenge, and within two weeks, my husband was making comments such as "Something's changed." "You're more interested in me." "Something's gotten into you." "You never told me that." "Thank you for saying all those nice things." I have had a

true change of heart toward my husband. He feels it, sees it, and loves it.

(All italics are taken directly from the article.)

Hebrews 10: 23Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. 24And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. 25Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

Ladies, if there is one gift I would love for you to receive on Mother’s day it would be a better relationship with your husband. Just as encouragement is a key to a better church fellowship, it is also the key to a better marriage. Nancy DeMoss believes you hold the key through your words of encouragement. I believe she is correct and demonstrating a Biblical concept. Will you accept the challenge?

Since some of the men I know are a little slow in noticing changes, you may want to give your husband a card alerting him to what you are doing. Allow this Father’s day to build toward a great mother’s day in 2011.

Thank you to these dedicated teachers for using their talents in sharing the love of Jesus with others. May God bless them as they prepare for their lessons each week.

Happy Father's Day to all the fathers in the church! What a blessing to be able to experience the love of a father.  My Daddy was a wonderful man. Yes, that is a very biased opinion.  There is not a day that goes by that I don't think about him.  I am so thankful for all of the special memories we experienced together.  He definitely had a strong influence in the lives of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  The last time I was in Bt. Prairie, one of the great-grandsons shared with me how much he missed Papa.  Zak thought Papa could fix the best Saturday morning breakfast.  Zak was right!!!!!! In Zak's words, “Papa always had a nice variety of foods to eat!"  Now, this Great-grandpa never cooked anything until he was 73 years old.  In fact, he learned to grocery shop, do laundry, and many household chores that had always been done by Mother.  After Mother passed away, he sent birthday cards, carried peppermint candy in his pocket for all of us to eat during church, and baked chocolate chip cookies for family and friends.  Daddy was an honest, hard-working farmer who loved life. One of his many sayings was "don't worry about things that are out of your control."  Thankfully, my Daddy came to know the Lord and had a personal relationship with Him.  What peace and joy fills my heart to know that someday I will be with loved ones again in Heaven. Come join us in Sunday School and learn more about the love of our Heavenly Father.

May God bless each father richly as we celebrate Father's Day on June 20th.

Loving you through Jesus,

Marian

World Evangelism Broadcast’s unique edge has been its’ ability to go where missionaries cannot go…and other means of communication won’t and cannot work… and through the airwaves, minister to everyone. Broadcast transcends physical, political and religious boundaries allowing those with searching hearts to hear the Good News through radio, television, and the emerging opportunities of the internet. In our Faith Promise budget we give to the World Evangelism Broadcast. If you are not a part of Faith Promise and would like to support this project, just mark your check – NMI World Evangelism Broadcast. A minute of airtime costs an average of $4.00.

Letter from Rev. Brian Wilson, District Superintendent:

PASTORAL CALL IS CONTINUED

Greetings, friends! On Monday, May 10, 2010, I met with your church board to conduct the Regular Pastoral Review of Pastor Jack McCormick, as required by our Church Manual, Paragraph 123. This is a regular, intentional and healthy element in our church policy and practice. Your board, your pastor and I discussed the pastor and I discussed the health and direction of the church, as well as the relationship of the pastor and the church and your missional vision.

The board agreed that the Call to Pastor McCormick should be continued. I celebrate this decision!

Your pastor has graciously accepted this invitation, and will continue as your pastor. The next Regular Pastoral Review will be scheduled in another four years. Any changes in plans at, or before, that time would be coordinated between the pastor, the board and the district superintendent. I encourage each constituent of the Manteno Church of the Nazarene to give full support and cooperation to the pastor and the church board – the leadership team of the church – that they might be strengthened to lead this congregation in reaching people for Christ.

Church Family,

Thank you so much for your prayers for Jessica and those on the mission trip with her to Thailand. We had a few anxious moments with the uprising in Thailand while they were there. We praise God for His watch care over them and their safe return home. Again, your prayers on her behalf were greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Jack and LeAnn
