Dear Substitute Teacher: Welcome to another exciting year in the Smithville School District. You are a vital part of our district and we value the contributions you make. It is your involvement and availability that enables our programs to continue. This handbook has been prepared for you to provide the guidance necessary for program continuity and coordination with the regular teacher/ instructional assistant assignments. Applying for Substitute Teaching

I. Substitutes will be required to complete an application with the Smithville School District. Applications are to be completed through TalentEd Recruit & Hire on the district's website (). TalentEd Recruit & Hire can be accessed by clicking on the "Careers" channel on the district homepage.

II. In addition to your application to substitute teach in Smithville School District, DESE requires an application, background clearance, finger printing, and college transcripts. Please review DESE Substitute Teaching Checklist by clicking the following link: . a. Certification: An application fee applies. The minimum requirement for substitute certification is sixty (60) hours from an accredited college or university. Substitute Teacher Certificates are issued as followed: i. 60 plus college hours required by the State of Missouri, a background check will be completed yearly and a certificate for the full school year will be issued. ii. An individual who has retired under the Public School & Education Employee Retirement Systems of Missouri (PSRS/PEERS) is limited to 550 clock hours of teaching during the school year. PSRS retirees are also limited to the amount of salary that can be earned during a school year. Visit for information. iii. An individual previously employed by the district must separate from service with the district for at least 26 consecutive weeks to be eligible to serve as a substitute. b. Background Clearance and Finger Printing: DESE contracts with 3M/Cogent for fingerprinting. Your first step is to register with MACHS at machs. or call them at 1.877.862.2425. The fingerprinting fee will be $40.30. Further instructions can be found at the end of this section. You will need the following information to complete the website's forms: i. Smithville Substitutes Code ? 0469 ii. Name - Smithville R-II School District iii. School Address - 655 S Commercial, Smithville, MO 64089 c. College Transcripts: Original transcripts from ALL institutions you have attended must be mailed to: Educator Certification, PO Box 480, Jefferson City, MO 65102-0480. Please be sure to include your Social Security number or Educator ID number on all of the transcripts.

III. Once cleared by DESE and you have been awarded your substitute teaching certificate, our district will require the following additional forms:
