*Call to Worship (Based on Genesis 18)

Leader: As Abraham welcomed the strangers People: So God welcomes us. Leader: God greets us with joy People: and says, "rest here for awhile." Leader: God brings out water to wash our dusty feet. People: God prepares a meal to nourish our weary spirits. Leader: So let us receive the gracious hospitality of our God. People: Let us rest in this holy place where there is shade and water, food and laughter.

*Opening Prayer:

O Lord our God, you are always more ready to bestow your good gifts on us than we are to seek them, and are willing to give more than we desire or deserve. Help us so to seek that we may truly find, So to ask that we may joyfully receive, So to knock that the door of your mercy may be opened to us; Through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.

3. Praise yet the Lord again: Alleluia! Amen! Life shall not end the strain: Alleluia! Amen! On heaven's blissful shore his goodness we'll adore, singing forever more: Alleluia! Amen!

Prayer for Illumination: O Lord our God, you are always more ready to bestow your good gifts on us than we are to seek them, and are willing to give more than we desire or deserve. Help us so to seek that we may truly find, So to ask that we may joyfully receive, So to knock that the door of your mercy may be opened to us; Through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.

Hebrew Lesson:

Genesis 18:1-15

1. The LORD appeared to Abraham near the great trees of Mamre while he was sitting at the entrance to his tent in the heat of the day. 2

Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby. When he saw

them, he hurried from the entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low to the ground. 3.He said, "If I have found favor in your eyes, my lord, do not pass your servant by. 4 Let a little water be brought, and then you may all wash your feet and rest under this tree. 5 Let me get you

something to eat, so you can be refreshed and then go on your way--

now that you have come to your servant." "Very well," they answered, "do as you say." 6 So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah. "Quick," he

said, "get three seahs of the finest flour and knead it and bake some bread." 7Then he ran to the herd and selected a choice, tender calf and gave it to a servant, who hurried to prepare it. 8 He then brought some

curds and milk and the calf that had been prepared, and set these before them. While they ate, he stood near them under a tree. 9 "Where is your wife Sarah?" they asked him. "There, in the tent," he said. 10 Then

one of them said, "I will surely return to you about this time next year,

and Sarah your wife will have a son." Now Sarah was listening at the entrance to the tent, which was behind him. 11 Abraham and Sarah were already very old, and Sarah was past the age of childbearing. 12 So

Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, "After I am worn out and my lord is old, will I now have this pleasure?" 13 Then the LORD said to

Abraham, "Why did Sarah laugh and say, `Will I really have a child, now that I am old?' 14 Is anything too hard for the LORD? I will return to you at

the appointed time next year, and Sarah will have a son."

15 Sarah was afraid, so she lied and said, "I did not laugh." But he said, "Yes, you did laugh."

Gospel Lesson:

Luke 9:18-20

18 Once when Jesus was praying in private and his disciples were with him, he asked them, "Who do the crowds say I am?" 19 They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life." 20 "But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?" Peter answered, "God's Messiah."

RESPONSE TO THE WORD

Affirmation of Faith

Apostles' Creed

UMH 881

I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth;

And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

*Doxology: "Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow" UMH 95

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost, Amen.

Pastoral Prayer and The Lord's Prayer:

Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on Earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Hymn of Celebration:

"Spirit Song"

UMH #347

1.O let the Son of God enfold you with his Spirit and his love. Let him fill your heat and satisfy your soul. Ol let him have the things that hold you, and his Spirit like a dove will descend upon your life and make you whole.

Refrain: Jesus, O Jesus, come and fill your lambs. Jesus, O Jesus, come and fill your lambs.

2.O Come and sing this song with gladness as your hearts are filled with joy. Lift your hands in sweet surrender to his name. O give him all your tears and sadness; give him all your years of pain, and you'll enter into life in Jesus' name.

Refrain: Jesus, O Jesus, come and fill your lambs. Jesus, O Jesus, come and fill your lambs.
