FBMC Bible StudyFebruary 5, 2020Church Theme: “20/20 Vision, “A Clearer Vision of who God is and the Plans He has for you.”The Gospel of John(Chapter 6)The Gospel of John is written with the purpose of proving that Jesus is the Son of God; the Messiah; the Christ. Let’s look at some excerpts from chapter 5 to lead us into our lesson today: John 5: 16-18 (NLT) 16?So the Jewish leaders began harassing[c] Jesus for breaking the Sabbath rules. 17?But Jesus replied, “My Father is always working, and so am I.” 18?So the Jewish leaders tried all the harder to find a way to kill him. For he not only broke the Sabbath, he called God his Father, thereby making himself equal with God.John 5:24 (NLT) “I tell you the truth, those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death into life.John 5:41-47 (GNB) “I am not looking for human praise. 42But I know what kind of people you are, and I know that you have no love for God in your hearts. 43I have come with my Father's authority, but you have not received me; when, however, someone comes with his own authority, you will receive him. 44You like to receive praise from one another, but you do not try to win praise from the one who alone is God; how, then, can you believe me? 45Do not think, however, that I am the one who will accuse you to my Father. Moses, in whom you have put your hope, is the very one who will accuse you. 46If you had really believed Moses, you would have believed me, because he wrote about me. 47But since you do not believe what he wrote, how can you believe what I say?”Today, we are in chapter 6 and see Jesus in the sea town called Tiberias. With a large crowd following Him Jesus presents a “challenge” to His disciples about feeding the crowd with limited resources available to them. This led to the miracle of feeding a multitude with a boy’s lunch. We will take a closer look at the miracle and the crowd’s response to Jesus from the miracle. Will they come to receive Him as God’s Son, or look at Him as a miracle worker, a food provider, a king, a second Moses, or another great leader? Today’s lesson will ask us if we worship and praise the Lord because of who He is or simply follow Him for the things He has done for us and the things we want from Him? Do we continually seek signs from Him to prove who He is or trust and believe in Him for what He has already done? John 6: 1-7 (NASB)After these things Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee (or Tiberias). 2?A large crowd followed Him, because they saw the signs which He was performing on those who were sick. 3?Then Jesus went up on the mountain, and there He sat down with His disciples. 4?Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was near. 5?Therefore Jesus, lifting up His eyes and seeing that a large crowd was coming to Him, said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread, so that these may eat?” 6?This He was saying to test him, for He Himself knew what He was intending to do. 7?Philip answered Him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, for everyone to receive a little.”Why was the crowd following Him?(Why do you follow Jesus?)Why did Jesus want to feed the people? What can we learn from His gesture in our ministries? What test was Jesus giving to Philip?(Why do you think Jesus tested Philip; look at John 2:43-46)What do you see in Philip’s response in verse 7?John 6: 8-15 (NASB)8?One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, *said to Him, 9?“There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are these for so many people?” 10?Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand. 11?Jesus then took the loaves, and having given thanks, He distributed to those who were seated; likewise also of the fish as much as they wanted. 12?When they were filled, He said to His disciples, “Gather up the leftover fragments so that nothing will be lost.” 13?So they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten. 14?Therefore when the people saw the sign which He had performed, they said, “This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world.” 15?So Jesus, perceiving that they were intending to come and take Him by force to make Him king, withdrew again to the mountain by Himself alone. What do you see in Andrew’s response in verse 8-9?Verse 11 said, “as much as they wanted.” What is the significance the people ate “as much as they wanted? How did the crowd receive and view Jesus in verses 14 & 15?John 6: 22-27 (NASB)22?The next day the crowd that stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other small boat there, except one, and that Jesus had not entered with His disciples into the boat, but that His disciples had gone away alone. 23?There came other small boats from Tiberias near to the place where they ate the bread after the Lord had given thanks. 24?So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they themselves got into the small boats, and came to Capernaum seeking Jesus. 25?When they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, “Rabbi, when did You get here?” 26?Jesus answered them and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. 27?Do not work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you, for on Him the Father, God, has set His seal.”What were the reason(s) the people followed Jesus now? What should be our reason to follow Christ? What should our attitude be towards material things and spiritual benefits?John 6: 28-40 (ERV)28?The people asked Jesus, “What does God want us to do?”29?Jesus answered, “The work God wants you to do is this: to believe in the one he sent.”30?So the people asked, “What miraculous sign will you do for us? If we can see you do a miracle, then we will believe you. What will you do? 31?Our ancestors were given manna to eat in the desert. As the Scriptures say, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” 32?Jesus said, “I can assure you that Moses was not the one who gave your people bread from heaven. But my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33?God’s bread is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” 34?The people said, “Sir, from now on give us bread like that.” 35?Then Jesus said, “I am the bread that gives life. No one who comes to me will ever be hungry. No one who believes in me will ever be thirsty. 36?I told you before that you have seen me, and still you don’t believe. 37?The Father gives me my people. Every one of them will come to me. I will always accept them. 38?I came down from heaven to do what God wants, not what I want. 39?I must not lose anyone God has given me. But I must raise them up on the last day. This is what the one who sent me wants me to do. 40?Everyone who sees the Son and believes in him has eternal life. I will raise them up on the last day. This is what my Father wants.”What were the people looking for in verse 30?Compare what they wanted with verse 11.Explain what Jesus said to the people in verse 35, “I am the bread that gives life…”Describe Jesus’ purpose in verses 39 & 40. Share how you feel from His purpose in these verses. ................
