I. The four seasons in Spanish are:

1. el verano summer

2. el otoño fall

3. el invierno winter

4. la primavera spring

*Remember, seasons in Spanish are not capitalized.

II. When talking about the weather in Spanish, the third-person singular of the verb HACER is

frequently used.---hace. Literally, what you are saying is “it makes”. So, for “hace buen tiempo”

you are really saying, “It makes good weather”

Weather Phrases Literal translation Common English Translation

1. ¿Qué tiempo hace? What weather does it make? What’s the weather like?

2. Hace buen tiempo. It makes good weather. The weather is good.

3. Hace mal tiempo. It makes bad weather. The weather is bad.

4. Hace (mucho) sol. It makes a lot of sun. It’s (very) sunny.

5. Hace (mucho) viento. It makes a lot of wind. It’s (very) windy.

6. Hace (mucho) calor. It makes a lot of heat. It’s (very) hot.

7. Hace (mucho) frío. It makes a lot of cold. It’s (very) cold.

8. Hace fresco. It makes cool. It’s cool.

III. To indicate that it’s raining right this very second we say : Está lloviendo.

IV. To indicate that it’s snowing right this very second we say: Está nevando.

V. To make a general statement, however, use the third-person singular of the verbs.

1. Llueve mucho. It rains a lot.

2. Nieva muy poco. It snows very little.

VI. To say “it is going to…” in Spanish we use the third person singular of the verb IR + a + infinitive

1. Therefore, we say: Va a llover. It is going to rain.

2. Therefore, we say: Va a nevar. It is going to snow.

VII. Use HAY for there is .

For example: There is a lot of rain. Hay mucha lluvia.

There is a lot of snow. Hay mucha nieve.

There are clouds. Hay nubes.

There is a storm. Hay una tormenta.

It is foggy. Hay neblina.

It is lightning. Hay relámpagos.

It is hailing. Hay granizo.
