Lesson Plan Lesson Plan Title: Butterfly’s Life Concept Topic: Life Cycle of the Caterpillar [Science]Colorado State Standards (include grade level): Kindergarten: Physical Science; Observe, investigate, and describe how objects can be sorted using their physical properties. Explain why objects are sorted into categories. Sort a set of objects based on their physical characteristics, and then explain how the objects are sorted. Life Science; Sort a group of items based on observable characteristics. Communicate and justify an evidence-based scientific rationale for sorting organisms into categories. Lesson Goals: To help students learn about insect anatomy and the life cycle stages of the butterfly through drawing and pictures. Student will also learn fun song for about the life cycles of some other insects. By the end of the lesson the students should have a basic understanding of the life cycle of the caterpillar. We will be listening to the story about “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” but first this read aloud our The Butterfly Ballad…Step-By-Step Procedures:1. Butterfly Ballad: A ballad to teach students about a butterfly’s metamorphosis from egg to caterpillar to chrysalis to adult. This should be the morning group song/poem. The teacher can either teach the song [to the tune of “Mary had a little lamb”] or she can read it to the class having them echo each the lines after her.2. Introduce to the class “Life Cycle of the Caterpillar” by watching “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” Animated Film by Illuminated Films on YouTube 3. Student Practice (Group): It is time to do the work sheet on the “Butterfly Life Cycle Wheel” Step 1: Print the Life Cycle Wheel on card stock. Step 2: Color the front and back wheels. Step 3: Attach the front to the back with a brass paper fastener.Step 4: Spin the wheel in the direction of the arrow to follow the life cycle.Step 5: Learning the stages, 1st Eggs, 2nd Caterpillar (larva), 3rd Chrysalis (pupa), and 4th Butterfly (adult)5) A fun song for teaching students about the life cycles of other animals besides the butterfly “Life Cycle Song” [Sing to the tune of “My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean”] They will learn about the Frog, Ant, Beetle, Bee, Firefly, and Ladybug. [We are working on the process more then the terms at this stage, terms will come over time]Assessment/Evaluation: First using a worksheet, students correctly label the 4 stages of the butterfly's life cycle, and then they write a sentence from the story of “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carle, what was their favorite part.
