Terry ProctorIWorldMay 2, 2012Say It To My FaceHave you ever called people names on an online video game? Have you ever played an online video game where someone talked trash, has been rude, or made you feel sad? This seems to happen a lot in online video games and it’s because teenagers or gamers are not face to face with one another, anonymous, and they play these violent video games. When teenagers are not face to face with a person that their playing an online video game with they seem to use more trash talk. John Suler, the author of “The Online Disinhibition Effect” says, “It’s well known that people say and do things they wouldn’t ordinarily say or do in the face to face world.” I think that he is saying that when teenagers have a chance to talk trash or say something they wouldn’t they ordinary say in face to face world because there in front of a screen and not in front of someone’s face and there in the safety of their home so they think that they have the freedom to say whatever’s on their mind. In Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 the narrator says, “He saw her leaning toward the great shimmering walls of color and motion where the family talked and talked and talked to her, where the family prattled and chatted and said her name and smile at her….”This demonstrates that media changes the way we communicate by making it easier to communicate due to the lack of emotions. Online video games lack emotions too because when teenagers play these online video games they put these emotions behind them and start killing or defeating their enemy with not even thinking to be sorry or feel bad for them. When being not face to face people have the courage to say something they wouldn’t ordinary say face to face with one another but it can be tracked back to them so some people make their self a new name or alias and this is called being anonymous. When being anonymous, teenagers think or know that they can say or do whatever they want due to being anonymous so it can’t be tracked back to the person that is saying or doing those rude things. In the article “The Online Disinhibition Effect” John Suler the author says “When people have the opportunity to separate their actions from their real world and identity they fell less vulnerable about opening up”. I think that he’s saying that people can expressed themselves without being embarrassed because there’s just a screen and not a real living person. They also have this idea of being anonymous in Fahrenheit 451 when the author says “The police went first and adhesive taped the victim’s mouth and bandaged him off into their glittering beetle cars so when you arrived you found an empty house. You weren’t hurting anyone you were hurting only things!” This quote connects back to my opinion that people want to stay anonymous so when something comes up that they did it won’t be tracked back to them. When teenagers play these violent online video games it changes the way teenagers act on them or off them. In the article “How Do Video Games Affect Kids” Blake Smith the author says “One negative influence that video games have is that they can foster violence. This means that when kids play these games and see their favorite character commit some type of violent action, they want to repeat it.” I think that he’s saying that when that teenager sees some violent image of something that their character did they would want to do it because it probably looks cool to them. In Fahrenheit 451 the narrator says “A minute later, Three White Cartoon Clowns chopped off each other’s limbs to accompaniment of immense incoming tides of laughter. Two minutes more and the room whipped out of town to the jet cars wildly circling an arena, bashing and backing up and bashing each other again. Montag saw a number of bodies fly in the air.” This quote connects to media controlling people’s emotions making them twist, change, and be put into another ones place like when the clowns started to bash each other’s heads inn and everyone started to laugh. As I’ve shown communication on online video games have changed the way teenagers talk and act so if you’re that type of person that likes to play these online video games choose one that is more suitable for your age or even go outside play and get some excise because Blake Smith has shown that violent video games higher aggression for teens and even younger. ................
