2018 RISING FRESHMAN SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONThe Rising Freshman Scholarship is awarded annually by the Virginia Water Environment Association (VWEA) to students graduating from high school in 2018 and planning on enrolling at a Virginia college, community college or university in a civil or environmental engineering or physical/environmental science undergraduate program. The objectives of the scholarship are to support our local universities and to promote student participation in VWEA. The award shall be $2,500. Criteria for the scholarship shall be as follows:a.Students must be graduating from high school in May/June of 2018.b.Students must plan on enrolling in a civil or environmental engineering or physical/environmental science undergraduate program at a Virginia college, community college or university, full-time, attending in the fall 2018 semester.c.Eligible students must have a 3.5 or greater grade point average in high school.Judging of the applicants will be performed anonymously by the VWEA Scholarship Committee using a weighted ranking system. The selection criteria are as follows:a.Academic Performance (35 points)b.Extracurricular activities (30 points)c.Work / research experience (10 points)d.500 word Essay on a water environment topic of your choice (25 points)Responses to the essay question may be submitted for publication in VWEA’s newsletter, The Conduit, if permitted by the applicant.The scholarship winners will also receive a free one-year membership to VWEA. The application deadline is May 25, 2018. The scholarship shall be awarded to the recipient during a presentation at the 2018 Joint Annual Meeting (Water JAM) held in Virginia Beach, VA during the Member Luncheon, September 11, 2018.All decisions made by VWEA for the selection of the scholarship recipient will be final.
