Introduction
What is CherryOS?-
CherryOS is a software translator that allows you to install Apple’s Operating System on x86 computer architecture. To put it simply you can now run Apple’s award winning Panther OS on your PC! This breakthrough in OS development now gives home users, software developers and web designer’s ultimate flexibility in both the operating system and hardware platform they choose for their personal computers or testing environments.
CherryOS runs OS X as a virtual machine on a Windows PC. This virtual machine has full network capabilities including the ability to share folders and access the web. The virtual machine also has complete access to the computer’s hardware resources including:
• Hard Drive
• CPU
• RAM
• Firewire
• USB
• PCI and PCMIA Bus
• RJ45/Ethernet
• Modem
CherryOS has been tuned for performance. You can expect to get about 80% of your processors power when working in the Apple Environment. For example a 1ghz PIII would run about the same as a 800mhz G3 machine. With a Pentium IV processor it is even possible to emulate a G4 PowerMac.
Why use CherryOS?-
There are many reasons why you would want to emulate a Mac on a PC. Here are a few ideas:
▪ Build and test applications for a Mac on your development PC.
▪ Test web site design for Mac web browsers without having to buy the hardware.
▪ Browse the Internet and access your email without having to worry about viruses, Trojans and spy-ware.
▪ Run OS X, the world’s best Operating System, on a less expensive hardware platform.
▪ Use your favorite Mac apps, like iLife, on a PC.
▪ Test drive Apple’s OS before switching to Mac.
Why ever you need to run Panther on a PC, CherryOS is your solution?
How is it done?
First you will need a PC with MS Windows 2000 or newer installed. The next step is to install the CherryOS software. CherryOS comes with an install shield and set-up wizard, so installation is a breeze. The next step is to install OS X. To install OS X simply launch Cherry OS either from the start menu or from the desktop shortcut that was created during installation of Cherry OS. The first time you go to use Cherry OS it will ask you for the OS X Install CD or ISO image. After loading the OS X software you will be guided through the next step of the installation by the Apple Computer install shield.
So now that you have installed CherryOS how do you start your Apple VM? This is done by simply starting the CherryOS application and than running one of the profiles created by the CherryOS set up wizard. Once your Virtual Machine is running you will automatically have access to network, hardware and peripheral resources.

The next step in getting your CherryOS set up is to create a new “Profile”. A profile is another name for a virtual machine. Each profile will have different characteristics such as virtual hard drives, operating systems and identifiers. It is possible to create multiple profiles on the same host machine. For instance if you would like to make one Profile for Panther, and another for Mac OS Classic that is possible by creating separate profiles of your CherryOS. To create a new “Profile” click the corresponding button on the navigation menu to the left hand side.
After clicking the New Profile button a Wizard will start that will assist you in creating your profile. The first step is to create a unique identifier for your profile. Your identifier can be any alpha-numeric name that you choose to identify this virtual machine.

After naming your Profile the next step is creating a virtual hard drive for the Apple OS to install on. You have two choices on the size of disk that you wish to create – 3GB or 6GB. To install a full version of Panther requires about 2.6GB of Hard Drive Space so we recommend that you use the 6GB virtual hard drive. Note that to create a 6GB Virtual Hard Drive the Host’s Drive will need to be in NTFS format. You will also need to specify the drive that you would like to install the Apple OS.

After clicking the next button you will see two progress screens. The first will say that it is “Formatting your selected partition as ‘HFS’. This may take up to 10 minutes.” HFS stands for “Hierarchical File System,” the native volume format used on modern Macintosh computers. The second dialog box will alert you when formatting the drive has completed. Click O.K. to proceed.

Now that you have successfully installed your emulation software and you have created your virtual hard drive you are ready for the fun part – installing Panther. The wizard will now ask you for the location of your Apple Installation Software. You have two options for installation either from the CD drive or from an ISO image on your network. After making the proper choice hit the finish button.
