EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES

AZRIELI GRADUATE SCHOOL

YESHIVA UNIVERSITY

I teach courses on curriculum and instruction, and on the methodologies of teaching Jewish studies. I also initiate and coordinate a variety of programs and activities. My principal current and recent responsibilities include:

□ Curriculum Development

I assisted the Association of Modern Orthodox Day Schools and Yeshiva High Schools (now: Yeshiva University School Partnership) on both the organizational and individual school levels. Previously, I led in a curriculum development project that groups together six elementary schools in order to promote curricular and instructional innovation in the area of Humash. Presently, I am working with a group of middle schools on curriculum and instruction in the Early Prophets.

□ Supervision and Staff Development

For nearly 30 years now, I have been conducting in-service training programs for the Jewish Studies faculties of schools across the US and Canada in both general pedagogy and specific course methodologies. In many cases, I serve in a de facto supervisory capacity establishing mentoring relationships with individual instructors. The courses I offer at the Azrieli Graduate School complement this training.

□ Ten Da`at

I was the Editor of "Ten Da`at: A Journal of Jewish Education," which was published annually until 2009. I was responsible for content and oversaw both the editing and publication. I coordinated the editorial board in its discussion of the suitability of submissions and worked with the printer on layout and graphics.

□ Day School Leadership Training

I directed the Intensive Training Program to prepare educators to assume senior positions of leadership in day schools. With a grant from The AVI CHAI Foundation, the program paired day school educators with veteran principals who served as their mentors. It met for 4 weeks during each of two consecutive summers and at three retreats during the intermediate school year. I retained overall responsibility for the curriculum, budget and administration.

COMMUNAL ACTIVITIES AND INVOLVEMENT

Hatzoloh

I am an E.M.T. (Emergency Medical Technician) and senior coordinator of West Side Hatzoloh Volunteer Ambulance Corps in Manhattan, which I joined 25 years ago. In this capacity, I have been responsible for the daily ambulance rotation and coverage and I represented the West Side to the citywide Central Coordinating Committee.

I prepare classes for members on Hilkhot Pikuah Nefesh and assist in formulating guidelines for their responses to medical emergencies. I have also addressed numerous student groups—elementary and high school, in class and during extra-curricular activities—on the need to learn first aid, CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), and defibrillation, and on my experiences as a first-responder to “9-11.”

Merkaz Torah

I am the informal “rav” of the minyan hashkamah at Merkaz Torah--Lincoln Square Synagogue in Manhattan, where I have conducted a weekly shiur on Parashat haShavua for 28 years. I also oversee the minyan on shabbatot, hagim and during the yamim ha-nora’im.

Manhattan Day School

I served for several years as a member of the board of directors of Manhattan Day School—Yeshiva Ohr Torah (N-8), which my son attended. My most recent participation involved the reformulation of the school’s mission and vision statements in cooperation with faculty and parents.
