Activity 4: Snowball vocabulary mingle

Aims

? to review new vocabulary from the Listening, and Reading and Writing papers ? to encourage learners to look up and record new vocabulary

Preparation

Make a list of any new vocabulary from the test. This could be words learners misspelled or answers they missed or got wrong. You will need small picture flash cards of the words in your list ? one for each learner in your class.

Step 1

Hand out the picture flash cards and ask learners to write the word on the back if they know it. Monitor to check spelling and help learners who are not sure. Extra challenge: stronger learners use dictionaries to look up unknown words.

Step 2

Tell learners they should walk around and test each other on their new words by showing the picture but covering the word on their card. If their partner can't guess the word, they should teach it to them. Once they have both done this the pair exchange cards and repeat the process with a new partner and their new word. The repetition in the task, because of swapping their cards, helps learners remember the words they are asked to guess. It is a good idea to demonstrate the activity with a confident learner first. For an extra challenge learners can ask: ? What's my word? ? How do you spell it? ? Can you make a sentence with it?

As feedback, collect all of the cards from the learners. Hold up the pictures and ask the class to shout out the words. Correct any mistakes with pronunciation. This is a nice way to round off the activity as learners can usually remember the majority of words and it shows them how much new vocabulary they learned from the test. Display the list of words on the board for learners to record in their notebooks.
