THE COMPASSIONATE FRIENDS ......OUR CREDO.....

We need not walk alone...We are The Compassionate Friends. We reach out with love, with understanding, and with hope. Our children have died at all ages and from many different causes, but our love for our children unites us. Your pain becomes my pain, just as your hope becomes my hope. We come together from all walks of life, from many different circumstances. We are a unique family, because we represent many races and creeds. We are young, and we are old. Some of us are far along in our grief, but others still feel a grief so fresh and so intensely painful that we feel helpless and see no hope. Some of us have found our faith to be a source of strength; some of us are struggling to find answers. Some of us are angry; filled with guilt, or in deep depression; others radiate an inner peace. But whatever pain we bring to this gathering of The Compassionate Friends, it is pain we will share just as we share with each other our love for our children. We are all seeking and struggling to build a future for ourselves, but we are committed to building that future together as we reach out to each other in love and share the pain as well as the joy, share the anger as well as the peace, share the faith as well as the doubts, and help each other to grieve as well as to grow.

We need not walk alone. . . We are The Compassionate Friends

Happy Halloween

For me, Halloween marks the beginning of the holiday season. This used to mark the start of an emotional decline that ran straight through Valentine's Day. October has Halloween; November has Thanksgiving Day; December has my birthday, my Cathie's birthday, Christmas, and New Years Eve; January has New Years Day (the day the accident happened) and January 13th(the day she died). So when Halloween came, I would just as soon have gone to sleep and wake sometime in February! As the children came to the door and called out, "Trick or treat", I would cringe because I would never hear Cathie say those words again. That was "then" and 15 years later, I am able to hear those words; and as I hand out their "goodies", I inwardly thank them for letting me remember when Cathie did go "trick or treating" and had so much fun..and having those oh-so very good memories, because they are good memories now; and it's all those good memories that keep me going...even after all these years.

Memorial Candle Lighting

The room is dark; one candle leaps into flame. A grieving father feeds another candle, and another, and another. A wave of flame sweeps the ballroom, slowly spreads light of grief, of hope, of love, and of compassion. Healing fire nears me. A nourishing spring rain of gratitude moistens my eyes and cheeks. Compassionate Friends tremble with tears and soft sobs. Mine seems to be the last candle to catch the wave. A toast, a thousand voices echo: "To our children". I say, "Hugs all around" encircle the circular table with Beth hugs strong, loving, and true.

The First Thanksgiving

Today is Thanksgiving Lord and I don't know what to say. On June 15th of this fractured year, You took my son away. Why should I be giving thanks? It makes no sense to pray. If you were listening to my prayers, You would have let him stay. I have wonderful friends and relatives, Lord. Still, it's very tough. I love each and every one of them and yet, it's not enough. The pain is unbelievable; it cuts right through my soul. Although my family helps me to cope, we are no longer whole. Could you send a sign Lord that heaven does exist? Is my child at peace in a better place, not cursed by You, but kissed? I could give thanks once again, if I knew he was safe and well; and in spite of the hole in my broken heart, survive this endless hell.
