TRADITIONS OF HOME

***Request for Proposals***

Tucson Meet Yourself –Arizona’s exemplary and dynamic folklife festival—will expand in size, format, footprint, and opportunities for public participation. Among the innovations being introduced, there will be a new cultural area called “Traditions of Home.” As it is the practice of TMY, proposals will be accepted from local ethnic, occupational, and other folk groups, clubs, or associations as well as from traditional folk artists. But for the first time in TMY’s history, this area will also be open to proposals from contemporary visual artists, independent curators, public folklorists, scholars, ethnic, folk, and other community-based entrepreneurs, and museum or cultural center professionals.

Proposals will be accepted until August 15, 2010 for “installation-art” treatments in an area of 10’ x 10’.

By “installation” we mean recreated scenes, montages, dioramas, or other formats that combine, assemble, construct, or duplicate in-site a space of everyday life, in this case a space that recalls any aspect of “home” and “traditions.” We include in this idea, home decorations of all kinds (objects and arrangements that give the spaces we call “home” special meaning and represent who we are). Installations are a kind of art display that uses sculptural materials (objects) to modify a contained space and how people experience it. Proposals can incorporate traditional, heritage-based objects as well as popular culture/contemporary influences. Use of electronic media is also allowed (home movies, etc.). Some examples that would be appropriate for this TMY opportunity include:

• Nichos or other front yard/backyard decorations;

• Living or family room areas, reflective of particular cultural traditions (furniture, family photos, collectibles, special appliances, souvenirs, wall hangings, window treatments, rugs, decorations);

• Found objects assembled in interesting ways that recall human stories;

• Cooking areas or cooking utensils (cookery) or eating areas and cultural styles of dining arrangements;

• Home altars (of any religious point of view, rooted in a person or a family’s cultural experience);

• Home workshops or hobby areas (sewing, ceramics, woodwork, etc.)

• Representations and/or interpretation of mixed cultural traditions in the same home and new interpretations of “family” (inter-ethnic or inter-racial couples; LGBTQ families; foster families and adoption experiences; immigrant and transnational families, etc.)

Proposals will be evaluated by Dr. Maribel Alvarez (UA Southwest Center) and a team of TMY advisors. Criteria for selection will include (1) how well the proposal fits the RFP objectives as described here; (2) appropriateness for TMY mission, audiences, and physical set-up; (3) originality and creativity of the ideas presented; (4) capacity and commitment to carry out a successful project.

All installations must be self-contained to the 10’ x 10’ area. Applicants are expected to assume all costs of materials, any fabrication needed, and transportation for the installation. Applicants must also be prepared to spend the time necessary to install on Friday (Oct 8) and de-install on Sunday afternoon (Oct 10). TMY will provide:

• Tents for display areas

• Electricity

• Security (24 hours from Friday night to Sunday afternoon)

• Docents and interpreters for the general public

• Technical assistance (by TMY advisors and staff)

Proposal Application is available at under “Get Involved” section. Direct any questions to alvarezm@u.arizona.edu or call Mia Hansen, Festival Director at 520-792-4806 mia@
