Welcome To

the lakehouse!!!

Welcome & Thanks!!

Welcome to the lakehouse!! Thank you for choosing to stay with me - I hope you have a wonderful time!! This book will give you important information that will help you enjoy your stay, as well as information on how things around the house work. Please make yourself at home and enjoy your vacation.

Phone

There is no landline phone at the lakehouse. However, the lakehouse does have a cellphone repeater to enable you to make and receive phone calls inside the house (Verizon works best with it). If you have trouble with the home, feel free to contact me via my Ohio number:

o Paul’s cell (513) 257-4291

Emergency - Call 911

Address of the lakehouse = 1291 Big Creek Road, LaFollette TN 37766.

First Aid Kit = There is a first aid kit in the left bathroom cabinet of the first master bedroom.

Fire Extinguisher = There is a fire extinguisher under the kitchen sink.

Medical Centers = Saint Mary's Medical Center (423-907-1200) is located 923 E Central Ave, La Follette, TN. There are also hospitals in Lafollette (take a right at the Walgreens) and in Knoxville, TN hospitals (about 45-50 minutes away South on I-75).

Pharmacy = Walgreens is the nearest Pharmacy, you past it on the way in.

My House is Your House

Use anything in the house you need. I live here about half the time, so my condiments and food are in the garage fridge and shelves. I m fine with you using anything that oyu may have forgotten, vs. driving all the way into LaFollette for a bottle of ketchup or some other condiment. . If you break it, please fix it or let me know ASAP so we can repair for the next renters. Things happen, don’t stress if something breaks or goes wrong, call me if we can help.

Kitchen

The plumbing to the lakehouse is connected to a Septic Tank System, consisting of kitchen sink, dishwasher, disposal, toilets, laundry trough, washing machine, shower, utility tub, and any other unit connected to a drain that carries waste to the septic tank. Please use only soapy water or biodegradable cleaners in these plumbing fixtures. Please do not pour or flush cleaning agents with bleach or strong disinfectants down the drain.

Refrigerators – the upstairs refrigerator has an ice machine that produces a small amount of ice. I recommend that you stop in LaFollette on your trip to the lakehouse to pick up bags of ice – the freezer in the garage refrigerator will hold 3 large bags of ice. I’ve also found that it is best to use the garage refrigerator for most of your beverages – it is easier to load/unload coolers here.

Internet

I do not currently have internet at the house - on this side of the lake the only available is via satellite, and it is not very reliable and has a limited high speed volume. If you want to listn to music, download it onto your phone before you arrive.

Supplies

Supplies provided include dish soap (e.g. Dawn), hand soap in the bathrooms, dish washing detergent, a minimum of 6 toilet paper rolls (2 rolls per bathroom), trash bags, 2 paper towel rolls, basic kitchenware, utensils, blender, crock pot, and linens. While daily maid service is not included in the rental rate, contact me in advance and we may be able to provide daily or other periodic maid service for an additional rate. Bring your own beach towels.

Note there are pots and pans, a coffee maker, blenders, crock pot, toaster, toaster oven, griddle, the outdoor pizza oven and an electric smoker.

Coffee

The coffee pot requires the use of a paper filter – filters are located in the cabinet above the counter next to the stove. It is a standard coffee maker, just fill with water, put the filter in the strainer cup, add the coffee and press on. Please turn off the coffee maker and unplug it when you are done.

Washer/Dryer

Located in the closet in the downstairs bunk room. These are standard appliances and are basic to operate. Please always remove the lint from the dryer after each use.

Trash

ALL TRASH MUST BE PLACED IN BAGS, TIED UP, AND PLACED IN THE OUTSIDE TRASHCANS (and close the trashcan lid, so raccoons won’t get and make a mess). FAILURE TO PUT ALL TRASH IN BAGS, TIED UP, AND IN THE OUTSIDE TRASHCANS WILL RESULT IN A LOSS OF YOUR SECURITY DEPOSIT. To help prevent raccoons from getting into the trash, please (i) place all trash bags in the 8 trash cans outside, (ii) secure the lids tightly onto the trash cans, and (iii) secure the bungie strap across the top of the trash can (don’t park your car too close – the raccoons like to push the trash cans over to get to the trash). During the prime summer season, trash is picked up twice per week on Tuesdays and Saturdays. You do not have to take the trash cans up the hill.

Dock Trash Can - As noted in the Check-Out Procedures, renters are responsible for cleaning the dock, and preparing the dock for the next renter. This includes:

• Remove all debris / trash.

• Trash - if dock trash can is full – you must bring the trash bag up to the driveway and put inside trash can.

Television

There is only one TV in the house, and it is connected to the antenna in the upstairs bedroom. There are ~250 DVDs – feel free to watch them, but please try to put them back in alphabetical order when you are finished, fir the next renter’s enjoyment.

Deck

Please remember to close the umbrella when not in use, or during strong rain / wind storms (the cover is under the grill).

Grill

There is a gas grill on the deck. See Section 9 of this book for the Grill Instruction Guide. If the electric start does not work within 3 seconds, please start the grill by inserting the handheld starter into the ignition hole of the right side of the grill. The propane measuring level is not accurate. There should be an extra propane tank in the garage. If the tank needs replaced, please give me a call (Paul 513-257-4291). If all fails, you can always go to Lowes to refill the tank(s) – let me know and I will reimburse you.

Please turn off the gas grill and clean the grill grate when finished cooking (a scrub brush is in a plastic bag in the grill shelf). Likewise, please remember to clean the grill cover once the grill has cooled. If the grease tray is full, please throw away and insert a new grease tray (thanks!). Children should never light or play around grill.

Highly recommended going to Hollingsworth Market (Phone 423-562-2128) for buying your grilling meat and groceries. It is a locally owned grocery store and butcher shop. You will not go to a friendlier hometown place and then they will cut the steaks to your preference. It is located on 433 East Chestnut Street, La Follette, TN 37766 – near the downtown area of Lafollette.

Outdoor Pizza Oven

There is an outdoor, propane powered pizza oven located on the mid deck. The pizza oven is easy to operate. Simply turn on the gas, push in on the red knob and turn to ignite the flame – hold the knob in for a view seconds, and visually verify that the flame is lit when releasing the knob. There is a yellow & black infrared battery operated thermometer in the kitchen drawer. To cook pizza, it is recommended to ensure the pizza stone is heated to 400 degrees F – this is between the low and medium settings on the oven – if you turn to high it will go to 600 degrees! It will only take about 5 minutes to cook pizzas at this temperature. There are two pizza boards, a pizza peel and a pizza cutter located in the kitchen. This is a great family activity, to make & bake your pizzas down on the mid deck near the fire pit.

Electric Smoker

There is a 4 shelf electric smoker located on the cement pad below the the sunroom. To use this smoker, fill the water pan in the bottom with water. Soak wood chips in water for a few hours, and use the handle and tray on the side to put them into the smoker (no need to open the door). There is a meat temperature probe located inside the smoker to read the temperature of the meat. When finished, ensure that there are no meat dropping left in the smoker.

Fire Pit

The fire pit is for your enjoyment – DON’T FORGET TO BRING S’MORES STUFF! As you can see from my yard, I have plenty of wood – use as much as you want. I keep the lighter fluid and a fire starter down on the wood pile. I typically just keep my cardboard boxes and other paper products, use those, along with the lighter fluid, to start the fire.

You can also use the indoor fireplace if you would like, as the weather gets cooler in the fall. There is plenty of wood in the rack outside the bunkroom, and there are some fire starters there as well. Please keep he screen door closed when using the fireplace – I like my house and don’t want it to burn down.

Water Fun & Safety

SAFETY & AT YOUR OWN RISK. YOUR USE OF THE HOUSE, DECK, DIVING BOARD, PADDLE BOARDS, KAYAKS AND PADDLEBOAT IS “AT YOUR OWN RISK.” LIFEJACKETS SHOULD BE WORN AT ALL TIMES WHEN NEAR THE WATER. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR PROVIDING CORRECT-FITTING LIFE JACKETS FOR EVERYONE. CHILDREN SHOULD BE SUPERVISED AT ALL TIMES WHEN ON THE PREMISES, ESPECIALLY WHEN NEAR THE DOCK, LAKE, PADDLE BOARDS, PADDLE BOAT AND KAYAKS. UNSAFE OR DANGEROUS ACTIVITIES ARE STRICTLY PROHIBITED AS SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH COULD OCCUR, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING ACTIVITIES: (I) DIVING AND JUMPING FROM THE DOCK, DIVING BOARD, PADDLE BOARDS, PADDLEBOAT AND KAYAKS; (II) DIVING AND JUMPING FROM THE SHORE INTO THE LAKE; (III) DIVING AND JUMPING FROM THE DOCK OR DIVING BOARD INTO THE LAKE; (IV) DIVING AND JUMPING FROM THE LOWER DOCK INTO THE LAKE NEAR OR AROUND THE BOAT LIFTS, OR DOCK CABLING; AND (V) RUNNING, WRESTLING, OR OTHER ROUGH PLAY AROUND THE DOCK, DECKS, PADDLE BOARDS, PADDLE BOAT, KAYAKS AND DRIVEWAY.

WATER EQUIPMENT

Next to the shed located between the house and the dock, there are a large number of water toys. As a guest, you are allowed to use any of these items during your stay at the lakehouse. I do ask that, if the items are used, that you return them to the shed prior to leaving – any items found to be missing will be replaced with the funds taken from your security deposit.

The dock

Dock Ramp: I adjust the dock ramp as the water level goes up and down. However, the TVA will sometimes adjust the water quickly so that the dock and dock ramp may come off the concrete ramp / steps (i.e. it could be floating in the water so you may have to step in the water to get on the dock). In the event you ever see the dock ramp off the concrete ramp / steps, please immediately call me (Paul = 513-257-4291) to let me know. (PLEASE DO NOT ADJUST THE DOCK RAMP YOURSELF BY TIGHTENING OR LOOSENING THE DOCK WIRE CABLES).

Dock Electric Power: The dock has electric power which is controlled by a GFCI that is mounted to the light pole located near the dock. If the power is not working on the dock, the GFCI on the light pole may have been tripped. If it is not, then it is possibly the main circuit breaker inside the house. The panel for all of the electric is located in the bunk room, behind the bunkbed closest to the entry door. If you have any issues with the electric power, please call meRope lights: As you walk up to the top of the dock, there is a switch on your left attached to the rooftop support at about waste level. This turns the rope lights that circle the dock on and off. Please turn off the rope lights when not being used.

• Dock Stereo = The dock stereo is located insire the storage shed on the dock. It uses a standard 3 mm phono plug – please ensure that you bring your iphone dongles if needed. The power to this shed is located on the deck post nearest the shed, above the electrical outlet. PLEASE DO NOT BLAST THE STEREO TOO LOUD TO BE AN ANNOYANCE TO THE NEIGHBORS. WE RECOMMEND BRINGING YOUR OWN MUSIC / SPEAKER SYSTEM in case the stereo does not connect to your music (or if this stereo again “walks off” by itself like other units have in the past). Please turn off the stereo when not being used.

• Motion light on dock: The otherswitch on the deck post is for the motion sensor light. I will typically leave this on at all times, as it provides assistance when docking your boat at night as well as security at the dock.

• Shoreline Clay: If you walk along the shoreline, the red clay is very tough to clean. Before walking on the dock or concrete steps or deck stairs, please wash your feet off completely so you do not get red clay / dirt on the dock / stairs. Thanks!

Dock Clean Up: As noted in the Check-Out Procedures, renters are responsible for cleaning the dock, and preparing the dock for the next renter. This includes:

• Organize the dock chairs / table / bar stools back in the original formation / condition.

• Dock lights – turn off (including dock ceiling fan).

• Dock stereo – turn off.

• Remove all debris / trash.

• Trash - if dock trash can is full – you must bring the trash bag up to the driveway and put inside trash can.

Paddle Boards, Paddle Boat and Kayaks

• I have two paddleboards, two kayaks and a paddleboat. The paddles are located either in the Kayaks or by the storage shed midway up the hill. Please keep these tied to the dock when not in use, and return to the storage racks at the completion of your stay. If any of these items are damaged, you may be charged for the applicable repair costs.

• Safety - USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. ALWAYS WEAR LIFEJACKETS. DO NOT STAND IN THE CANOE. CHILDREN SHOULD NOT USE THE CANOE OR PADDLE BOARD WITHOUT AN ADULT.

Boat Slip

There is an open covered slip, plus at least 2 more spaces for boats on the outside of the dock (uncovered). The covered slip has a hydraulic lift. My personal boat will be on the lift in the uncovered slip, and other boats may be moored away from the dock. Please do not use or get on the owner’s boats. Unless authorized by the owner in advance, please do not use the boat lifts. If authorized, the lifts should only be used by an experienced adult. ANY DAMAGE TO THE OWNERS OR RENTERS’ PROPERTY AS A RESULT OF USING THE BOAT LIFT WILL BE SOLELY THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE RENTER.

KIDS SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO SWIM UNDERNEATH OR AROUND THE BOAT LIFTS.

WHEN ARRIVING AT OR DEPARTING FROM THE DOCK WITH YOUR BOAT, PLEASE BE CAREFUL NOT TO HIT THE WATER SLIDE.

Marinas & Boat Ramps & Rentals

• Marinas: The closest marinas that provide fuel are Whitman Hollow / Sequoyah / Indian River / Norris Dam (see map for marinas). Whitman Hollow and Sequoyah Marina are the closest. There is a brochure in the notebook with more information as well as a lake map. We personally recommend Whitman Hollow (1203 Whitman Hollow Road, LaFollette, TN 37766. PH 423-562-9941 – see directions below) since that marina is the closest and we find the service there wonderful. Also, we find gas is cheaper at Whitman. However, Sequoyah is much larger / nicer dock with more amenities.

• Boat Launch: In addition to the marinas noted above, the closest boat ramps include:

o Campbell County Park. As you are driving into the lakehouse on Demory Road, you will pass right by the Campbell County Park boat ramp. This is the most convenient ramp for launching your boat.

o Whitman Hollow Marina. By boat on the water, the closest boat ramp (with full service marina) is Whitman Hollow Marina – located at 1203 Whitman Hollow Road, LaFollette, TN 37766. PH 423-562-9941). DIRECTIONS to Whitman Hollow: Take exit 134 for TN-63 E/US-25W N toward La Follette/Jacksboro/Caryville. Turn left at TN-63 E/US-25W N. Turn right at Hunters Branch Rd. Turn right at Demory Rd. Sharp right at Whitman Hollow Rd. Continue straight until you reach the Whitman Hollow Marina.

o Cove Point Boat Ramp. In the Big Creek area, we do have a private boat ramp that can be used by residents/guests. From the lakehouse, continue on Big Creek Road as if you were going into town. At Axley Road, take a right to continue on Big Creek Road. Follow Big Creek Road around the lake, continuing to bear right at the intersections. The road will eventually turn into Cove Pointe Road. The ramp is near the end of Racetrack Hollow. NOTE: This ramp is pretty steep, so ensure that you have a good 4WD vehicle if you use it.

o Sequoyah Marina. Located at 336 Lake View Lane, Andersonville, Tennessee  37705. Phone (865) 494-7984.

• Boat Rentals: As noted in my VRBO Listing, I am happy to provide Boat Services at very competitive rates to the marinas.

Courtesy – Cove & Neighbors

No Wake: Please be courteous of our neighbors by not creating a heavy wake while driving out / into the cove. This is for the safety of swimmers, protection of boats tied up to the docks, and the avoidance of erosion along the shoreline. Thanks for your help!!!

Avoid Nuisance Behavior. Please also attempt to avoid anything which may be a nuisance or annoyance to or in any way interfere with the quiet enjoyment of the other residents in the vicinity of the Premises (i.e. excessively loud music). A good rule of thumb is to attempt to maintain quiet hours between 11pm and 7am. NOISE COMPLAINTS FROM NEIGHBORS OR CALLS TO POLICE WILL RESULT IN LOSS OF ENTIRE DEPOSIT.

Parking

Parking at the lakehouse is only permitted on the driveway or near the top of the driveway along the street (please keep cars and entire trailer off the road for safety reasons). Please remember to always use your parking brake when parking on the driveway. On-site parking is limited, so please attempt to limit the number of vehicles to one per bedroom to avoid parking difficulties. Please do not hook-up or use any motor home, camper, bus, van, motor home or tent.

Exercise/Walking

The road offers a great place for morning or evening walks. If you go to the left, the road is much less hilly.

Wildlife

There is various wildlife you may see including: deer, bears (although we have never seen them around), snakes, ducks, geese, skunks, raccoons, beavers and other common wildlife – including an occasional dog / cat / pet from a neighbor. Please avoid the wildlife and do not feed these animals any food since it will result in these animals coming around the lakehouse more often. There are a few birdfeeders throughout that attract various birds such as downy and red-bellied woodpeckers, black capped chickadees, white breasted nuthatches, tufted titmouse and various other common birds of the southeast.

NO SMOKING

Please no smoking in the house. If you smoke, please do so outside and dispose of butts in a trashcan after properly extinguishing with water. SMOKING IN THE HOUSE WILL RESULT IN LOSS OF ENTIRE DEPOSIT.

PETS

I do love dogs, so they are allowed in the lakehouse. I do ask that you keep it to 2 dogs maximum. If there is any damage or additional cleaning required over & above the standard cleaning (for example cleaning dirty couch cushion covers), the damage will be documented and charges to remedy will be taken from the security deposit.

NO FIREWORKS. NO FIREARMS OR OTHER WEAPONS.

• Restaurants – By Car:

o Bo’s Place: This is the convenience store about 3 miles from the lakehouse as you drive in. They are extremely friendly, and have probably the best fried chicken in LaFollette. They also have most of the basic necessities that you might need, instead of running all the way into town. They also have live bait of you want some for your fishing.Definitely worth going in and checking out if you are swinging by.

o Ridge BBQ at Cove Lake State Park = Great food from BBQ Pitmaster Mark Ricard with large portions, with live bluegrass music every Monday / Thursday evenings starting @ 6:00PM. Note they do not serve alcohol since the restaurant is inside the Cove Lake State Park. Located at 131 Goose Lane, Caryville, TN 37714. (423) 907-8202. M-TH 11-8PM, F-Sat 11-9PM, and Sunday 11-4PM. o Whitman Hollow Marina = Chuck is continuing to expand the marina, and has added lunch and dinner. Plus, they often have good bands that play on Friday and Saturday nights.

• Alcohol. You can buy beer in the Jacksboro / LaFollette area every day (including most docks), except for limited hours on Sundays (the Super Walmart 423-566-5318 is on the main drag – I believe they sell only beer from 12-8PM on Sundays). Bo’s place ha a good supply of beer. While we recommend you bring your own wine/liquor, you can also buy wine/liquor/beer at THE LIQUOR BARN located at 161 John Mcghee Blvd, Caryville, TN 37714 (PH 423-562-1222). You can also drive up I-75 to exit #141 to another store called 141 Wine and Spirits, LLC located at 291 Howard Baker HwyPioneer, TN 37847 (PH 423-566-0100).

• ICE:A fun place to get ice is from the huge Ice Machine on Jacksboro Pike, about half a mile from the turn onto Hunters Branch Roat. It is the big white bulfing on the right, just below the boat dealer. It dispenses 15 pound boags of ice for $175 (or 20 pounds if you dump it directly into your cooler). Definitely a ‘landmark’ in LaFollette….
