To build a good foundation of skills, consider spending up to a week on LINC Classroom Activities, CLB 3, “Returning Faulty Merchandise” with lots of “Sending Them Back to the Well” activities for optimal long-term lexical retention by students.Listening activities, some with vocabulary and quizzes, can be found at : Ss have a solid foundation in and a high degree of comfort with this vocabulary, higher levels can continue with realia—actual returns policies from local chains. On the following pages, you can see the materials I used with my multilevel seniors’ class in Windsor, Ontario. The proposed timeline is completely dependent upon the speed of the learners. Some require only an hour per step, others might work more slowly and thoroughly. Formative assessment helps guide the pace.Session 1 – Digest one policy together as a class.Session 2 – Break into teams, one team taking a different policy. Their goal is to help one another, teach one another and become experts in this store’s policy.Session 3 – Still in teams or in pairs, Ss fill out some role play cue cards (see below) to be handed back to the teacher for vetting before use. After checking the logic of the information, T hands these back. Ss practice within expert teams before acting out the role plays.Session 4 – Together as a class, with help from the teacher, come up with the chunks of language that will be needed to enact the role plays, e.g., “Do you have your credit card with you?” “What seems to be the problem?” “I’m sorry. At this point I can only offer you a gift card for the value of the returned item.”Session 5 – Set up tables to enable A/B pairs to sit across from one another. Clerks will remain stationary while customers move clockwise to a new clerk at the ring of the bell. Give each customer 2-3 purchase cue cards to carry with them around the circuit. The first pairing may require 10 minutes, as students are still getting accustomed to the demands of the role. Each subsequent pairing can have a reduced time limit as Ss become more fluent and efficient at expressing their parts. Have fun with it, be flexible, and TUNE IN to YOUR students’ needs!Session 6 – Repeat the prior activity, allowing clerks and customers to swap roles.Just for fun: My student posed this riddle to the class and gave us the weekend to solve it! It is tied to the topic of returns. : Store brand?
