Super Speller! "Tour de Revs" stop at Frey Village's Swenson Park
Bernice Hahn
Three pastors with a mission to increase world hunger awareness rode into Middletown on Tuesday, June 2, on a three-man bamboo bike as part of their 13,000 mile trek across the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).
The Rev. David Twedt, the Rev. Fred Soltow, and the Rev. Ron Schlak, all from West Virginia, began their "Tour de Revs" on May 13 with a goal of raising $5 million for World Hunger. They will end the tour in Minneapolis at the ELCA Churchwide Assembly in August.
On April 14th, 2009, Bernice Hahn, age 91, of Frey Village, participated in an over 50's Spelling Bee that was sponsored by Mid Penn Bank and hosted by the Steelton Senior Center in the Swatara Township building. Bernice was the oldest participant in the Local Bee, outspelling over ten other participants to win first place by spelling words like, "amalgamate" and "undulate."
Bernice was cheered on by fellow Frey Village resident, Phyllis Muench, along with Phyllis's daughter Susan Paige. Bernice would like to thank all of those involved in planning the Spelling Bee and for the lunch which was catered by the Olive Garden.

The tour arrived in the Lower Susquehanna Synod around 3 p.m. on the campus of Frey Village in Middletown. They were joined by 10 bike riders from
the synod territory. After greetings by Bishop B. Penrose Hoover and staff of Frey Village, bikers mounted their bikes and rode eight miles to Trinity Lutheran Church, Steelton,

You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get people interested in you.
--Dale Carnegie
I want to thank all of you who welcomed me to Frey Village as your Summer Chaplain. It is my honor to serve you as a friend with the love of Christ. I have a little story on friendship from my home in New Mexico.
A college student spent a year with a group of Navajo Indians (The Dineh--the people) on a reservation in the Southwest. This was part of an assignment for a doctoral thesis. She lived with a family, slept in their hut, ate their food, worked with them, and lived the life of a twentieth-century Navajo Indian.
The grandmother of the family spoke no English at all, yet a very close bond formed between these two. In spite of the language difference, they shared the common language of love and understood each other. Over the months the student learned a few phrases of Navajo, and the grandmother picked up a little of the English language. When it was time for the student to return to the campus, the tribe held a going-away celebration. It was marked by sadness since the young woman had become close to the whole village and all would miss her. As she prepared to get up into the pickup truck and leave, the old grandmother came to tell her goodbye, personally. With tears streaming from her eyes, she placed her gnarled, weathered hands on either side of the young woman's face, looked directly into her eyes, and said in her broken, halting English "I like me best when I'm with you."
When we are in the presence of good friends we feel this way. Friends value our time together They overlook the hurts, the cares, and the disappointments of our lives. They lift our spirits and our self-esteem. Jesus Christ is the greatest of all friends. We should strive to be Christ like and remember the Navajo statement, "I like me best when I'm with you."
And the Holy Writings were put into effect which said, "And Abraham had faith in God and it was put to his account as righteousness; and he was named the friend of God."
Be blessed and draw closer to God during "Ordinary Time"....... a time for spiritual growth, in Christ Jesus.
Frey Village Summer Chaplain,
Renee MaLoy

Bernice was awarded with a $100.00 gift card to Giant from the Mid Penn Bank.
Bernice's exciting trip was organized by Jackie Holzel, Frey Village Activities Director and Barb Grabuloff, Activities Assistant.
Jackie Holzel, Frey Village Activities Director
Jackie Holzel stated, "We like to enable all Frey Village nursing residents to continue with their life interests and pursuits and when I saw this opportunity to enter a resident in a spelling bee contest we wanted them to have that chance. We first held a mini spelling bee at Frey Village to see which resident would be representing us. Bernice spells with so much expertise and so very quickly that it is amazing to watch her compete. Certainly Bernice is an excellent speller and we are all so proud of her accomplishment."
When Bernice Hahn returned to Frey Village she was met with a group of staff members and residents clapping and singing, For she's a Jolly Good Speller.
Frey Village would like to thank Bernice for representing our community and congratulate her on her impressive achievement.
