TRAINING

To successfully complete the training program you must complete the following phases.

Phase 1 Orientation, interview and selection.

Phase 2 Drug testing at our designated laboratory and Criminal Record

Background check and fingerprinting

Phase 3 Classroom preparation for Commercial Drivers License written tests.

Phase 4 Comprehensive school bus driver training (Washington State Requirement)

Phase 5 Behind-the-Wheel preparation for CDL skills test.

After completion of all the above, a Temporary School Bus Drivers Authorization will be issued.

After driving for the North Kitsap School District and demonstrating an ability to work well with students and staff, an application will be made for permanent certification.

PHASE 1 - INTERVIEW AND ORIENTATION

Each candidate will be interviewed by the Director of Transportation (or his designee) and the Driver Trainer in

a private setting. Candidates will be notified as to their acceptance or rejection when all the interviews are complete.

The candidate must successfully complete an interview and orientation. After orientation, the candidate must be prepared to ride selected bus routes with regular drivers, if training during school year. The approximate time when riding along on a bus, is from 6:00 –9:45 am and 1:30- 5:00 pm.

During orientation, the required steps to obtain a Washington State School Drivers Authorization; federal, state, and school district requirements; drug and alcohol testing and criminal background checks will be discussed.

PHASE 2 - FIRST AID, DRUG TESTING and FINGERPRINTING

A First Aid course will be responsibility of the TRAINEE. The fee will be from $14.00 to $25.00 and can be done online. Example: $19.95 for First Aid only

A drug test at our laboratory will be scheduled before you will be allowed to RIDE with students. This fee will be billed directly to the district from the lab. Afterwards, you will be included in the random pool for drug and alcohol testing for which the district picks up the fees.

A Washington State Patrol and FBI will be done through Human Resources.

PHASE 3 - CLASSROOM PREPARATION FOR COMMERCIAL DRIVERS LICENSE

Instruction in this portion of the training prepares candidates for the Department of Licensing written test.

Each candidate must obtain:

School Bus Driver Abstract of driving record, dated within 3 months. This also can be done online through dol.driverslicense/drivingrecord.htm

Commercial Medical Examiners certificate. You will need to schedule a Commercial Drivers Physical Examination with an approved CDL physician. Your Medical certificate should show the expiration date and physician’s national register number. Physicals should be scheduled for the earliest possible date.

No Department of Licensing testing is allowed without the completed physical.

A $20.00 fee will be charged by the Department of Motor Vehicle Licensing for the Commercial Driver’s License and the necessary endorsements. If you fail any of the three exams, it will be another $10.00 to retake the test.

PHASE 4 - COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL BUS TRAINING PROGRAM

This phase of the training will prepare the candidate for school bus driving. The following subjects are required by the State of Washington to obtain a school bus driver authorization.

During this phase of training, the trainee will spend some time on different buses observing routes and also attending the classroom.

Immediately following completion of the Comprehensive School Bus Drivers Training, the candidate will enter

The Behind-The-Wheel training program. This program will prepare the candidate for the Commercial License skills test.

PHASE 5 - TRAINING IN PREPARATION FOR THE CDL SKILL TEST

This phase will focus on preparing the trainee to understand;

Air Brake System & Endorsement

Passenger Endorsement

School Bus Driver Endorsement

Behind-The-Wheel driving (Closed course, rural, and city driving)

One type of bus will be used while in training for the skills test. When the candidate is determined to be prepared for the skills test, an appointment will be scheduled with a “third party” tester. Beginning September 1, 2015, the $100 Skills Test Fee must be paid directly to ESD112 prior to a driver presenting to any local Licensing Service Office (LSO) for issuance of their Skills Test Results Form. School district or personal checks will not be accepted.

Allowable methods of payment include

Credit or debit card (school district or personal) $110.00 paid to ESD 112

10.00 processing fee

School districts and/or authorized driver trainer instructors will need to contact Regional Transportation secretary at ESD 112 Regional Transportation at 360-952-3641 or 360-750-7500 to submit payment.

ESD 112 will issue a “ESD 112 control or verification number”. The Driver Trainer will schedule your Skills Test with the 3rd party tester. This test takes approximately two hours and covers all requirements presented in Phase #4 & #5.

Following the successful completion of the skills test, the Department of Licensing will update and/or renew your driver’s license. If you are within 90 days of renewing your license and wish to add the CDL endorsement, the fee would be a total of $130.00 for 5 years, $186.00 for 6 years.

Following the completion of the skills test, the candidate is required to qualify in other types of buses in the North Kitsap School District fleet. A schedule will be established for this training on an individual basis.

After the successful completion of all the phases, a Temporary School Bus Drivers Authorization will be issued. After the temporary authorization is issued, the candidate will be able to drive students unsupervised and will be paid for the hours worked. After driving for the North Kitsap School District successfully and demonstrating an ability to work well with students and staff, a permanent School Bus Drivers Authorization will be obtained.
