Unit 1 – Processes and Skills – Framing

Unit 2 – Research - Who am I?

Unit 3 – Professional Practice – Inspirational Media Personality

Unit 4 – Critical and Contextual Awareness - Semiology

Reflective Log

Unit 1 week 1: framing and composition.

The session was about getting to learn shot types. We looked at various different pictures of shot types.

In this session we had to go out and take pictures of the following:

• Establishing shot

• long shot

• mid long shot

• mid shot

• mid close up

• close up

• extreme close up

• high angle

• low angle

• Dutch angle

• rules of third

• leading lines

• symmetry

• natural framing

• depth

This was to get us used to using these shot types and become more comfortable with using the camera.

I liked how I could have my friends model for me instead of being too camera shy, I also liked the fact that there was many places in the college i could have gone to which could help the pictures. I might need to work on my time consuming, i feel as if i take too long to get the right picture i want. I'm very happy with how my pictures turned out; they were in focus which was the main thing I’m proud of. I definitely feel like i have a better understanding on the shot types.

We didn't leave any equipment behind, we all took good care and made sure to hand it over with carefulness. One thing we made sure of was to take the camera off the tripod before moving location because it could have gotten damaged.

Unit 2 week 1: Who am i?

This session was about learning who we are. We had to make a collage filled with pictures to show exactly who we are.

I decided to make a PowerPoint, the first slide is filled with pictures and then the rest is just a quick and simple explanation.

I thought this would have been easier but when you actually put the pictures into a collage you see that there isn’t much there, so to actually think about the stuff I liked was kind of hard.

I feel like I need to work on my actual layout and make it look cleaner.

I’m happy with how it turned out because it’s just a collage and I hoped the stuff I put in there could show the sort of person I am.

I hope in a years’ time I can add more stuff to the list and I can progress as a person and become stronger and more confident in my work.

Unit 3 week 1: Inspirational Media Personality

In this session we had to pick a person, it could have been anyone. We had to research this stuff about them:

• Who are they?

• What did they do?

• Why they inspire you?

• What have they done?

• What about their work inspires you?

I found this task quite easy because I already knew quite a bit about Selena Gomez and since I’ve had her as my inspiration since I was about 7-8 I already knew why she was my inspiration.

I liked how my work turned out because there’s quite a bit of writing there and a few pictures to give it a livelier look.

Unit 4 week 1: Semiology

In this session we learnt what semiology was and that meant the study of signs and symbols. We also had to pick a T.V. show that had to be Series 1, Episode 1, ideally British, and ideally current.

I decided to go with the show Misfits. Although it’s not up to date there are people that still act that way in Britain.

In the opening scene we aren’t focused on one character, it shows a glimpse of all the characters getting changed into their probation uniform. We then see all the characters together and we see how they act and talk.

The first character we hear speak is the probation officer named Tony. We can see as he’s talking to the group he’s trying to sound really inspirational but no one is having it. He doesn’t like when people are talking when he’s talking and he doesn’t like fights. He doesn’t like it when people speak back to him. Something happened to him after the storm.

The first person out of the group we hear talk is Nathan. In the first scene we can see that he’s a smoker and observes a lot, he also seems to be the funny one. He seems confident and tries to be a smartass. He’s very talkative and speaks his mind. He always assumes things about people.

The person who speaks after that is Gary who speaks cocky. We don’t see much of Gary throughout the episode but we know he’s easily offended and angered. Clearly doesn’t like Nathan

Next is Alisha. We can see she’s the sexy one and she knows it as the first scene of her shows her boobs and how she liked staring at herself in the mirror. Doesn’t care about her probation officer. Dresses girly. Has an attitude.

Curtis is the only character that doesn’t wear his jumpsuit fully. He doesn’t want to work with the group. He doesn’t like to be reminded that he used to be a runner.

Kelly is a chav and dresses like a tomboy. Likes to call out on people and gets defensive. A girl called Kelly a slag and that got them into a fight, after the storm we know she can read minds as she hears Alisha in her thoughts call Kelly a chav. This could be that Kelly might be concerned with what other people think about her.

Simon, known as weird kid by Nathan. We know that Simon is very quiet and doesn’t find that much stuff funny. He tried burning someone’s house down. Constantly gets picked on by Nathan.

We know that each character has a completely different trait and shows the uniqueness between all of them. In the episode we can see the area they are in is pretty dirty and has lots of graffiti over the place, it’s the perfect place for the group to be dumped on to either clean up or paint over as part of their probation.

In conclusion we can tell that Nathan is one of the main characters as he was the one to talk back to the probation officer first. This opening scene gives up a clear understanding on who each character is and how they dress, look act etc.

CHAPTER 2 – WEEK 2

Unit 1 – Processes and Skills – Lighting

Unit 2 – Research – My Favourite interest

Unit 3 – Professional Practice – How to get a media job

Unit 4 – Critical and Contextual Awareness - Genre

Reflective Log

Unit 1 Week 2: Lighting

In this session we were talking about white balance and the different kind of lighting.

We were asking to go out and take different type of lighting shots, these were:

• Auto white balance

• Daylight

• Shade

• Cloudy

• Tungsten light

• White fluorescent light

• Flash

These photos had to be done in interior so that means inside, exterior means outside and then interior/exterior which is inside but you know that there’s light coming from outside.

White balance means adjusting colours so that the image looks more natural, and Low colour temperature is the warmer, orange colour while high colour temperature is the colder, bluer light.

This photo was done with auto white balance and I think it was the best looking one because the rest of the photos came out looking orange or blue, so this photo was the one that balanced it out.

I think that the tungsten light didn’t work with this one because it’s inside there is no windows so it shouldn’t really look that warm, and the whole blue colour doesn’t make the photo look great, it looks unbalanced and messy.

I now know by doing these shots what white balance actually is, it makes the whole photo look better when you know what you’re actually doing and you know how to use white balance.

The thing that went well the most was actually seeing the different between the photos, you could tell the shots apart. I need to work on making sure I know what order the shots went in and learning what each shot is off by heart. I’m happy with how the work turned out, some photos could have been in focus but that’s something that people can work on. I feel like I gained a better understanding of the subject, I just need to work on the light names.

We made sure to handle the equipment with care, we checked it to see if the camera was on the tripod correctly and we made sure to keep all the bags within our sight.

Unit 2 Week 2: My Favourite interest.

In this session we had to write about our favourite interests. It could have included stuff such as:

• Why this interests you?

• Who influenced you?

• Any experiences?

• Where are you now?

• Many more

My favourite interests are ghosts, I would say that my mum who herself has an interest in ghosts would have been the one to influence me. She would read books watch videos and look up stuff to do with ghosts and that’s how I got into ghosts myself. We would watch YouTube videos, watch T.V. programmes and movies based around ghosts and horror. I would say that all my dark side has come from my mum.

I believe in ghosts because it gives an understanding of life after death. I myself am still scared of ghosts even though they were once alive just like me, but the excitement is still there when watching stuff about them and trying to capturing them on camera up close and personal.

I have had experiences with ghosts. My granddad died in August 2008 and when it came to Christmas the same year there was a picture of my dad and brother and behind them you can see my granddads face in the window. My granddad used to have a certain smell to him, it wasn’t a bad smell but you would definitely know it was his smell and as my mum and I was going upstairs we both smelt it and we instantly looked at each other because we knew. I’ve had some more experiences where someone else and I saw red eyes in a graveyard and my dad’s had a knife chucked at him when no one else was in the room.

I’m still into ghosts especially since there has been more T.V. shows about ghost out lately such as ghost adventures, ghost hunters etc. There have been more you tubers out there ghost hunting and looking at abandoned buildings which is in the ghost package. It’s the same for horror movies, I’ve just grown up with that and it’s stuck with me.

I thought this would be harder because I was thinking at first that I didn’t have really any hobbies to write about but interests could have really been anything so I decided ghosts because it’s just something I’ve grown up to know a lot about.

I’m happy with how the work turned out because I provided quite a bit of experiences and a clear statement of who influenced me. I think the thing I need to work on the most is just making my work have more writing because I tend to not write as much if not needed.

Unit 3 Week 2: How to get a media job.

In this session we had to write down what was written on the board, and then we had to locate three different vacancies and then detail where it was found and what the job entails.

What is the media industry?

• Film industry

• Television

• Radio

• Newspaper

• Magazines

• Social Media

• Music

• Games

• Special events/conferences

• Marketing

• Advertising

• SFX-CGI

• Pre-Production

• Production

• Post-Production

This all relates back to NETWORKING.

• You have to make business cards to give for possible employment.

• Cold calling- so going the old fashioned way and actually calling them up yourself or can involve in-person visits, such as with door to door, offering them your CV. Be CAREFUL and do your RESEARCH. You need to call them up and get the correct details about the company to show that you know what you’re doing.

• Social media- so Instagram, twitter, YouTube and many more. When uploading a picture or video make sure to hash tag it because that can get you far. You can make your own connections through social media by putting yourself out there. There could be possible competitions to get involved in which would help on your CV.

• Skills- you have to know your stuff whether it is editing, planning, filming etc. Go to university; make friends because there could be many opportunities- many connections.

• Look for many different vacancies, whether it is specialists, employment agencies, apprenticeships, internships or traineeships.

• Apprenticeships are where you work there for a certain amount of time and you get paid and you learn which can get you a qualification. Usually lasts for 3 to 4 years.

• Internships is where you work the same hours and days as apprenticeships maybe more but you get no pay and no qualification.

• Traineeships are where you can either work full time or work part time or even for school and you would get paid to learn new stuff; this would go on for usually 12 months.

I have chosen the following three jobs:

• Film director

• Film/video editor

• Television camera operator

• I got all the jobs from the website prospects

Film director, when doing this job you have to:

• Read scripts.

• Work with writers and give feedback on the script.

• Select actors- sometimes this is done with casting directors and producers.

• Watch rehearsals.

• Tell actors where to stand during filming.

• Select the location for the filming.

• Have meeting with people working with you such as camera, art department and costume throughout the filming.

• Work with the producer on budgets and schedules.

• Work hard to stay on budget and schedule.

• Watch all creative parts of the production.

• Work with the editor and choose the final version of the film.

• Select the music/ work with the composer to decide on the music.

• Get the contacts of writers, producers, film festivals and public funding bodies.

• Maintain contemporary technical skills.

• Have an awareness and knowledge of emerging industry trends.

Film/video editor, when doing this job you have to:

• Get given a brief, and maybe an outline of footage, or it could be a shot list, script or screen play.

• Gather all raw footage, with camera shots either recorded or put onto video tape for inputting into the computer

• inputting uncut rushes and sound, and synchronizing and storing them into files on the computer

• digitally cutting files to put together the sequence of the film and deciding what's usable

• creating a 'rough cut' (or assembly edit) of the program/film and confirming the exact cut for the next and final stages

• Ordering and adjusting the content to ensure the logical sequencing and smooth running of the film/video.

• Television camera operator, when doing this job you have to:

• Gather, prepare and set up equipment before filming, which may include tripods, monitors, lighting, cables and leads and headphones.

• Offer advice on how best to shoot a scene and explain the visual impact created by specific shots.

• Plan shots, for example when filming an explosion, there may be only one chance to get things right, so shots need to be greatly planned beforehand.

• Practise the camera moves required for pre-arranged shots.

• Study scripts.

• find solutions to technical or other practical problems (for an outside broadcast, for example, the natural light conditions need to be taken into account when setting up shots)

• Be prepared to take in and experiment with ideas.

• Work quickly, especially as timing is such an important thing.

• Take sole responsibility in situations where only one camera operator is involved in the filming.

• Keep up to date with filming methods and equipment.

• Repair and maintain equipment.

• Demonstrate a good awareness of health and safety issues.

• Drive crew, actors and equipment to and from locations.

In conclusion this task was a little hard because looking for a good website to actually give me useful information isn’t an easy task but I finally got there in the end.

I think this task went really well and I was able to get a lot of useful information that could help me for the future.

Unit 4 Week 2: Genre.

In this session it was to write down in your own words what was written on the board and then to make a list or table of as many genres we can think of but it can’t be sub genres so no slasher films, no zom-rom-coms etc. we have to do a written description of the narrative, character, visuals and technology.

Genre is the type of film/category/classification of film which is applied to all media.

So the expectation for Horror would be Death, Jump scares, violence, monsters, dark, blood and gore etc.

And the expectation for Thriller would be Plot twists, relatable characters, mystery, psychological, deception, suspense, dark etc.

Same goes with Comedy you have the funny scenes, fast paced, simple plot, relatable character, slapstick, sidekick, situations relatable etc.

With Sci-Fi you have the typical space, future/other worlds-places we don’t recognise, technology, aliens, lasers, robots etc. this can tie in with fantasy but less technology and more myths.

Western is all about deserts, Death Valley, anti-hero, cowboys, shoot outs/stand offs, horses, tumbleweed, cactuses, saloon doors etc.

The narrative is how the story is told. You have the voiceover narrative so they talk over the scene in a movie either about what is going on or just about their life.

You have the idents narration so words on the screen, this can be to tell the time of day, where the characters are, what the film is about.

And then you have the flashbacks/ flash-forwards this helps the viewer’s get a clear idea of what happened to them or the location or what will happen to them or the location.

So with each genre you have the typical plotline, with the western genre it’s saving the town, with sci-fi it’s saving the universe or saving the world, thrillers it’s solving the mystery and typically rom-coms are getting the girl/boy.

Action is about saving the city or saving the love interest, it has the typical hero, villain, love interest, side kick. Its visuals are mainly in a city and the colour is dark and blue to show the intenseness. It uses SFX such as with the explosions and the blood. It could use CGI with the gun shots and maybe sometimes the explosions

Adventure is Finding the artefact, it has the explorer, love interest, villain. The visuals are in a desert or jungle, usually bright and sunny to show how hot the location is. SFX can be used for the explosions and the blood.

Comedy is clueless guy does clueless tasks. You have the responsible one, the funny one, the stupid one. The visuals are usually the calm neighbourhood and then it takes us to the big city or any other location. The colours represent the real world so it’s usually a natural look. There’s not really any sfx or CGI as it’s usually based around relatable situations.

Horror films are about defeating The Monster. You got the female victim, the non-believer, the hero and the monster. The visuals are usually in dark woods or forests and the colours are usually very dark to show the creepiness. There’s a lot of SFX when it comes to horror because you have a mask for the monster to wear and there is a lot of blood, and cuts maybe more gore on the characters.

Musicals are singing about life. You have the character that’s going through a change, the character that supports them typically a love interest. The visuals are sometimes in a big city so there’s a lot going on; it’s usually bright and colourful to show the magical side. There could be SFX used for over the top explosions at the end of the film.

Sci-fi is about saving the universe/world. You would have the heroes, the aliens, scientists. The visuals would usually be in space or an unfamiliar surrounding (made up). When it comes to sci-fi movies it’s solely based around CGI because a lot of the things are not real and if it was based in space then there is a high chance that was not actually filmed in space.

War is about saving the country. You would usually have the sergeant, the soldiers, and the enemies. The visuals are in an open field area where everyone’s fighting each other, the colour is most of the time dark to show how long ago the most extreme wars were and how they were the dark times. There’s many SFX and CGI for the explosions and the shot from the guns, and also the blood.

Westerns are about saving the town. You have the cowboy, lawmen, and outlaws. The visuals are in a desert area usually a town with the tumbleweed and cactus; the colour is bright to show that there is nothing but heat around them. There’s SFX or maybe CGI used for the guns.

In conclusion this to me was the hardest task because it was hard to decide the typical characters for each film as, yes they may be the same genre but when you think about it it’s like well they’re not all the same and you have to keep thinking to yourself ‘think typical, think cliché’. It was the same with the SFX and CGI it was like well most films have either one I just have to find out what the SFX and CGI in the movie was.

I’m happy with how the work turned out because it gives a brief description of each movie that people would be able to understand, and can work out what is to be expected with that certain genre.

Unit 1 – Processes and Skills – Editing

Avid is editing software that big companies sometimes use. It looks quite complicated when you first see it but you just need to get the hang of it.

In this session we learnt how to use a little bit of avid, we learnt about the bins, how to import videos and audio, we also learnt that we always have to check if it’s linked to our folder and not someone else’s. There were different types of shortcuts we could use through the keyboard. The ones we learnt were:

• L = Play

• K = Pause

• J = Rewind

• I = Mark in

• O = Mark out

• V = Splice-in

• B = Overwrite

Be careful when it comes to V and B because V would place the clip next to the clip you want it to be next to, and B would place the clip over the clip you would want it to be next to.

We also got to have a little bit of an experiment with the effects which were pretty fun and helpful to move the clip along or give people a bit of a laugh.

The bins are used to place your files in; it’s where everything can be found.

I liked this task because editing is going to be a big thing in the future on this course and I need to be really good at it to make my films stand out.

Unit 2 – Research – Research Questions

A story about Satan who accidently left the gate open which caused his dog Beelzebub to escape into the above world. As he gets out into the real world he looks normal but gradually he starts turning into his true form unless he returns to hell. He only eats the souls of humans, so he gets into his current families head and makes them take the souls from people for him.

I based this off of a picture I found which is a handmade doll of a dog with horns. It also tells the story of how a dog just wants to get back to its owner but doesn’t know how.

The part of the story I would like to film is where the family takes the soul from a random person that they lured into a dark place. Then a dark figure comes along and as the family try to take its soul they realise they can’t, then they hear a bark and the dark figure leaves with a barking dog.

Narrative:

• What is the story about?

• Why am I telling this story?

Characters:

• Why are they in the story?

• What would happen if they weren’t there?

• What do they bring to the story?

Competition:

Location:

• Am I allowed here?

• Is it too dangerous?

• Why would I go here?

• Is this the perfect place?

Costumes:

• What material do I need?

• How do I get it?

Props:

• What do I need?

• Why do I need it?

• How do I get it?

Actors:

• Who do I need?

• How do I get them?

• How many do I need?

Technical:

• Camera?

• Lighting?

• Sound?

• Editing?

• Do I have the skills to do that?

• Do I have the equipment to do that?

Unit 3 – Professional Practice – My chosen job in the industry

In this session we had to write about what job we wanted in the media industry, we had to talk about what the job is, what you do in the job, why we want it as our job and how we’d think we’ll achieve it.

I want to be a director. To be a director you’d need to read scripts, work with other people and departments such as writers, camera department, art department, costume department, producers, editors, casting directors and many others making the movie, you’d direct actors during the filming, select locations for filming, work around the budget and the schedule, you’d need to work with the composer to select the music for the final film. Those are the main big ones and there are minor jobs that you’d need to be prepared for.

I have wanted this since I was about 12 years old. Since we had our first media lesson in school and I got to the director I found myself pretty powerful being able to be the one in charge of a production. I always knew that being a director was a lot of work but to be the one who made a movie or television programme successful must be the best feeling in this world. I want the world to see my work and have amazing reactions to it.

I know that if I was to be a film director there is many responsibilities. There’s many skills that you would need such as creative ability, problem solving skills, communication skills is the big one but I’ve had no problem voicing my opinions, leadership skills is another big one since you’re the one that’s basically in charge, The ability to work under pressure, time management skills and lastly attention to detail which is something that I need to work on.

To become a director there is many ways. You’d could go to university and have proper training in that department. You can make videos and post them onto social media in the hopes that someone big would see them. You can start off small in the media industry even if it’s fetching drinks or food for people because that way you get to see how others work.

In conclusion this task was pretty easy because I have read quite a bit about directing and I knew exactly why I wanted to do it and I thought about it very well which is why I’ve been wanting it for about 6 years.

Unit 4 – Critical & Contextual Awareness – Narrative & Character Development

In this session we had to cover what narrative is and all the different types of narrative and then we had to talk about the characters with why are they in the story? Why are they behaving like that? Etc.

A narrative is the story and how it’s told, it’s used in many movies and helps understand the story a little bit more.

Narrative devices

You have the voiceovers this is when you have the character talk over the clip, it’s used in many movies and it can either help know the character or help know the location.

You have the idents which is words on the screen an example of this would be for star wars as the title card rolls up.

You have flashback/ flash forward which gives us key narrative information such as with in the film memento, it can help us figure out what happened to a character in the past or it can help with the future.

Narrative structure

Narrative structure is where you put something into order whichever way you want it and so that it makes sense. There are many different narrative structures,

You have linear which is just a simple beginning, middle and end so it’s in chronological order. A few movies that do this are Prisoners, James Bond, Woman in black, whiplash and any superhero movie.

Non-linear could be anything from ending, beginning, middle and then possibly the ending again or it could go along something like the middle, ending, beginning, ending and then middle again. It doesn’t matter how the order goes but this would be in non-chronological order. Examples of this could be memento, pulp fiction, Donnie Darko.

There’s closed narrative which is a when it’s completely finished so it has a beginning, middle and end it’s done they caught the killer and that’s it. So an example of this would be a murder mystery because there was a killer but they found out who it was so that’s the end.

Open narrative is where you have a cliff-hanger which is commonly used in soap operas such as East Enders with its duff-duff moments. But it’s not just used for soap operas, it can be used in a movie such as the famous Italian job (original) where they’re hanging off of a cliff and that’s the end of that. This can also be seen in other movies such as Empire Strikes Back and Infinity War.

You get single stranded which is a basic one main plot, so you know what they’re main goal is and who they might be after. So this would be in films likes James Bond, Murder Mystery and basically all the Superhero movies.

You then would get the multi stranded which is easy to recognise and more than one story/ plotline. So this is seen in many of the soaps because there are multiple characters who have their own story and that could either be in the same episode or different episodes down the road.

There’s realist which is recognising the delivery of the story so it’s very much relatable. And then you would have the non-realist which is exactly what you’d think not recognisable and not relatable.

When it comes to narrative there’s the Todorov’s theory so it goes like.

You can’t have a narrative without a character. Characters are the main thing that every media product needs. Every character must add to the story. There are always these questions when it comes to characters:

• Why are they in the story?

• Why are they behaving like that?

• Why are they doing that?

• What do they bring to the story?

• What would happen if they weren’t in the narrative?

With characters they also need to have something that makes them real, and gives them a motivation.

Take this for example:

The character Alex Russo is the main character in the T.V programme Wizards of Waverly Place. She was born in the back of a cab, she has two brothers and she’s the middle child. She likes to go shopping and her favourite hobby is poking things with a stick. Her favourite subject is art and she’s a daddy’s girl. That’s the part that makes her real and relatable.

Her motivation to win the wizard competition is to stay with her boyfriend, and it’s also to prove she’s more than a troublemaker. She almost lost to her older brother Justin because she had to help him out of a trap.

In movies/ T.V you have:

• Hero/ Protagonist – They key character.

• The helper – Wise old person e.g. Obi Wan Kenobi.

• The villain – The bad guy.

• False hero – Steals the hero’s fame.

• Antagonist – Works against the hero.

• Donor – Motivates the hero: by the words/ by objects.

• The dispatcher- Sets the story going/ provides the motivation.

• Heroine – Love figure – Why the story is happening.

• Anti – hero – doesn’t follow the rules.
