Negative painting
Highlights
Lifting
Dark details
1. Draw or transfer the rooster onto paper
2. Wet the neck and back red-brown feathers, then add the lightest raw sienna color, adding the burnt sienna, brown madder and some orange to make it brighter.
3. While still wet, add the very dark around head and back.
4. Same treatment with the wing feather.
5. Add very rich red comb color, lifting out lighter areas and adding darks for shadows.
6. Add greenish color on tail feathers, some tail feathers and body have a violet or alizarin crimson tint to the very dark feathers. Negative paint the very dark feathers around the redish neck and back feathers.
7. When dry, lift out the colors of greens and violet feathers in the dark body.
8. Add raw sienna to the feet and add dark details.
9. Add details to eye and beak.
10. Scratch out highlight in eye.
11. If a background is used, I would use one of the colors in the rooster, but very light and only used in a little area with soft blended edges. (minimal background)
