masking fluid

tip

You can mix permanent masking fluid directly into the paint to create permanent color--it's great for standout detail work.

How it works:

Permanent masking fluid can't be removed from your paper. It dries to a glossy finish that prevents watercolor from soaking in. Since paint can rest on top of the gloss, the medium is great for creating light-to-dark contrast effects. You can use a wet brush to remove excess (still wet)

paint from the mask.

masking fluid

For clean lines and clear-as-abell contrast, go with removable masking fluid. You can apply this popular medium wherever you want the paper to resist color. When the fluid is completely dry, the paint won't seep through it--and later, you can peel away the mask to

reveal white space. Tip: Masking fluid has a milky look when it's applied. When it turns translucent, you'll know it's dry.

in the details

A resist pen--it's a bottle of masking fluid that's equipped with a fine-tip applicator-- which makes detailed line work a breeze. Try lightly sketching your design with a pencil. When you like what you've got, trace the lines (only the areas you want to remain white) with the resist pen. Now let the fluid dry, and paint!

Tip: You can use a rubber eraser to rub away removable masking fluid. Just be sure to work gently to avoid tearing the paper.

Masking fluid is not kind to brushes, so use an old one. And keep that brush usable between applications by wetting it and coating it with soap before you begin. Then wash it well after every use.
