Procedure:

Display landscape paintings students from previous years have completed. Ask students if they can identify the regional area students were trying to represent in their watercolor paintings. Have students compare and contrast different paintings. What colors would they use in their landscapes and why? What features of the painting reveal clues as to what geographical location is the paintings focus? How does the geography of their landscape relate to characteristics of local cultures? Have students imagine what combination of techniques they could use to achieve a sense of depth in their paintings? What role does the water play in mixing this type of paints? How can using more or less water effect color intensity and how colors mix? Which techniques are most effective for creating the illusion of texture? Have students compare landscapes, and discuss what techniques are most useful in achieving the desired effects.

Meets Standard #3 by having students compare and contrast watercolor landscapes of students from previous years.

Meets Standard #4 by having students pick out physical features in the landscape that would assist them in recognizing a cultural region and its inhabitants.

Meets Standard #5 by having students assess landscape paintings, and identify characteristics that create the illusion of depth?

Demonstration of techniques:

• Show students how to successfully apply watercolor techniques to achieve a desired effect, and demonstrate how to use a variety of watercolor brushes.

• Explain the concept of layering and color mixing, and demonstrate how these methods can be utilized to create a sense of depth in artwork.

• Demonstrate the flat wash, graded wash, wet in wet and dry brush techniques and the advantage of combining all of these methods to create a realistic landscape painting.

Instruction to students:

Each student will need a piece of watercolor paper. Then students will use a pencil to lightly sketch features of their landscape. Once students have completed this step they should get a large and a small watercolor brush, cup of water, and a set of watercolor paints. Students should now tape down their water color paper with masking tape. The masking tape should create an eighth of an inch border which will serve as a pigment barrier. After this students should carefully consider what techniques they will use. The watercolor techniques should be applied in succession. Objects in the background will be blurrier and more faded than objects in the foreground. After the main color areas have been filled in and dried students will go back and add dry brush details. After students feel their painting is finished they will complete a paragraph describing it.
