Course Overview:

October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. Representatives from the Watertown Police Department will present an informative program that will educate attendees on:

• The warning signs of Domestic Violence

• The basics of Domestic Violence

• The different types of Domestic violence

• The help that is available locally to someone who is a victim of Domestic Violence

• The steps that the WPD & partners take to combat Domestic Violence

• The mandatory arrest law

About the Speakers:

Joanna (Jo) Vitek was born and raised in Columbus, Georgia. She is a graduate of Baker High School in Columbus. She began her law enforcement career in Georgia in 1977. Chief Vitek holds a Bachelor of Science Degree and a Master of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Central Florida, in Orlando Florida. She is a graduate of the Rural Executive Management Institute of the University of Arkansas, the International Association of Chiefs of Police National Law Enforcement Leadership Institute of Violence Against Women, the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center Domestic Violence Instructor’s Course, the 109th Session of the Administrative Officer’s Course of the Southern Police Institute in Louisville, Kentucky and a graduate of 8th Session of FDLE’s Senior Leadership Class, in Tallahassee, Florida. Chief Vitek has been an adjunct instructor for the Brevard Community College in Florida.

She is currently an adjunct professor of Criminal Justice at Mount Marty College in Watertown. Chief Vitek is a member of various law enforcement, civic and community organizations.

Ryan Remmers was born and raised in Watertown, SD. He is a graduate of Watertown High School and holds a BS in Sociology with a Criminal Justice Emphasis from Northern State University. He began his career in Law Enforcement as a Reserve Officer with the WPD in 1997. Ryan started full-time with the WPD in 1999. In 2000, Ryan received the Coler-Williams Award. He became a Field Training Officer in 2002; in 2006 he was promoted to Sergeant. Ryan was then promoted to Captain in January of 2006 and was assigned to the Administrative Services Division. In late 2009, Ryan was transferred to the Criminal Investigative Division, where he managed the department’s crime prevention programs and supervised the school resource officers and detectives. In 2011, Ryan was transferred to Captain of Professional Standards where he currently manages internal affairs, training, background investigations, grants, monthly and annual reports and procedures and strategic planning.
