Introduction This resource pack has been created for colleges by AoC Sport and Mind. In 2017 an AoC Mental Health Survey found that 85% of colleges had seen an increase in students with disclosed mental health conditions. 81% also reported having `significant numbers' of students who had undisclosed mental health difficulties.

With 50% of mental health problems established by age 14 and 75% by age 24* colleges are integral in supporting students to look after their mental health and wellbeing and help them form good habits that they will continue into adulthood.

In the British Active Students' Survey (BASS) 2019/20, 25.6% of students were found to be inactive, doing less than 30 minutes a week of moderate intensity physical activity. The survey showed that active students had higher life satisfaction, felt more worthwhile and had higher happiness levels.

The personal development judgement of the 2019 Ofsted Education Inspection Framework references that colleges should be:

? developing learners' confidence, resilience and knowledge so that they can keep themselves mentally healthy

? developing learners' understanding of how to keep physically healthy and maintain an active lifestyle.

These resources are a starting point for colleges to support students to address how to keep themselves physically and mentally healthy through physical activity. We encourage colleges to use these alongside other ways of supporting students to be active around the college both in the curriculum and wider opportunities.

How to use the resources

The resources are flexible so they can be delivered by any tutor and adapted to suit each individual group.

The resources can be delivered in person or online. We actively encourage staff that are not from the sports department to deliver these where possible because for inactive students, staff that are deemed sporty can seem intimidating.

The full set of tutorial resources consists of the following:

Slide deck - The slide deck should be used as the basis of the tutorial sessions. We ask that you do not edit the content of the slides unless there are instructions to do so but slides can be deleted if you do not intend to use them. Tutor notes (this document) - This tutor pack supports the delivery of the slide deck. The notes provide information and different activity options. There are appendices which are referenced in the notes to support different elements of delivery. My mental health and physical activity habits resource booklet - There is an accompanying resource pack to be printed for students to complete. This involves reflecting on their physical activity habits and set themselves targets to improve their mental wellbeing. More information can be found in Appendix F. Graphics - Most of the graphics are included in the slides but can also be used by the colleges for social media or printed as posters.

The resources have been divided into three sections that we recommend be delivered as three different sessions but can be adapted further if needed. See below

Overview

Section one ? What is physical activity and how much should we aim to be doing?

Recommended delivery time Up to 30 minutes

Objectives: ? Understand what counts as physical activity ? Know how much physical activity we should aim to be doing ? The difference between moderate and vigorous intensity ? Define active, fairly active and inactive.

Section two ? The benefits of physical activity (with a focus on mental health)

30-45 minutes

Objectives: ? Understand the benefits of physical activity ? Understand how physical activity helps our mental health ? Learn about the five ways to wellbeing.

Section three ? My wellbeing and physical activity.

30-45 minutes

Objectives: ? Understand the barriers and motivations to being active ? Reflecting on your own relationship with physical activity

2

? Setting some targets to look after your mental health with physical activity.

To support students to be more active we encourage colleges and tutors to think about how they could incorporate some physical activity and wellbeing activities into their tutorial sessions on a regular basis. Appendix A: Activity ideas for tutors is to support this.

Notes

Section one ? What is physical activity and how much should we be doing?

This section aims to dispel misconceptions and fear around physical activity and that someone needs to be "sporty" and to be doing organised or competitive sport to be active.

We recommend with discussion that up to 30 minutes is allocated for this section when delivered as one session.

Objectives: ? Understand what counts as physical activity ? Know how much physical activity we should be

doing ? The difference between moderate and vigorous

intensity ? Define active, fairly active and inactive.

? Ask students what physical activity is ? facilitate discussion

? Reveal answer ? Key message: Physical activity is different to

sport and exercise. It includes sport and exercise as well as other activities which involve bodily movement.

Activity options:

1. Quiz using slides 4-8 ? The quiz is exploring different things we do that

use our body and whether they count as physical activity ? If delivering online, depending on the platform being used you could use a poll function to make it interactive

2. If delivering online, depending on the platform being used you could use a poll function to make it interactive

3. Kahoot quiz 1 questions 1-4 ? The quiz is the same as the slides but using

kahoot to make it more interactive ? The questions and additional notes can be found

in Appendix B
