Word of the Month

By Kendra Long

Caring is when you show compassion for someone; compassion means to recognize the suffering of another person and want to help. For example, if you feel bad for someone (such as if they are getting bullied) and try to help them, then that is caring. If you are worried or concerned about someone, that means you care about them. If someone seems upset at school, try asking them what is bothering them to show you care. Other examples of caring are: the Warmth Tree, Pennies for Patience, Jump Rope for Heart...Aston Elementary participates in a LOT of caring activities!

Sports

By Jake Vickers

The Super Bowl is one of the most popular events in the NFL (National Football League). In the past, there have been a lot of dramatic wins, like how, in 2007, Eli Manning and the Giants defeated Tom Brady and the New England Patriots by a field goal. In the 2002 Super Bowl Brad Johnson and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated Rich Gannon and the Oakland Raiders. This year, the Seattle Seahawks beat Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos 43-8 in a blowout.

Science Corner

By Ethan Saddler

Did you ever wonder what makes a boat float?

Well, it all has to do with gravity and the weight of what you are putting in water. Here’s an experiment that puts that theory to the test. To get started you need a sink or a large bowl filled with water and two pieces of paper that are the same size. First, you roll the first piece of paper into a ball and with the other piece of paper make a paper boat. The pieces of paper should be the same size. If you don’t know how to make a paper boat you can look it up on YouTube or use the directions below. Drop the paper ball into the sink and then the boat. The paper ball should gradually fall to the bottom of the sink. If you made the boat right, it should float!

The boat floats because all of the weight of the paper is spread out over the whole surface.

When an object is placed into water there are two things that go to work. The first is gravity which we know tries to pull objects down. The other force at work is buoyancy. Buoyancy is defined as the tendency to float in water or other liquid. The amount of buoyancy or “float-ability” is decided by the weight of the amount of water the object pushes aside. If the weight of the pushed or displaced water is more than the weight of the object, the object floats.

So, for my experiment the two pieces of paper weighed the same but the ball was smaller than the boat. Both objects displaced water, but the water the boat displaced weighed more than the water displaced by the ball, which is why the ball sank and the boat floated. I hope you enjoyed this experiment.

Peace Building for School

By Alyssa Ruggieri

Valentine’s Day coming up soon, so if there is an argument with your friends, you’re going to want to have a way to resolve it. First, if you do get into an argument, one thing you should try is to walk away for a minute or two then come back and try to work it out. The second thing you should try is to count to ten, and then talk to the person you’re fighting with and tell them how you feel about the situation. Another thing you should try is to talk calmly and not yell or be frustrated with the person. I think a good idea you should try is to talk to a teacher so they can help you with the problem and hopefully resolve it, and you won’t be locking horns with people. I think those are some ways you can be a great peace builder for our school.

The first American chocolate bar was made in 1894, but they didn’t become really popular until World War I, when they became soldiers’ favorite snacks.

TIP: Recycle by making candy wrapper jewelry. Since wrappers are made from different kinds of plastics, they are hard to recycle. Make yours a fashion statement instead!

Presidential Trivia

By: Connor Day

If you like Presidents’ Day, keep reading. Hi, my name is Connor Day and I am going to tell you some pretty interesting facts about presidents. Ever think about trying to wrestle Abraham Lincoln? Well, when he was a young man he got defeated only once out of 300 matches! That’s pretty impressive.

Whenever you think you have good handwriting, think about James Garfield. He could write Latin in one hand and write Greek in the other at the same time! He must have been pretty smart.

Herbert Hoover’s son had two alligators that could run loose in the White House.

Ulysses S. Grant got fined 20 dollars for speeding in his horse and buggy.

When Barack Obama was in high school he was nicknamed Barry O'Bomber because of his jump shot. In Arkansas, Bill Clinton’s nickname was Bubba.

Here’s the award for most pants owned by a president: Chester A. Arthur had 80 pairs of pants. He changed his pants several times a day. I hope you learned something new because of this; I know I did.

Ms. Hannah is Bananas

By Dan Gutman

Ms. Hannah is totally bananas! At least that’s what A.J. thinks. Ms. Hannah is the new art teacher and everyone thinks she’s weird. First she made a giant ball of rolled up newspaper, then she made the class make sculptures out of trash, and made A.J. and Andrea pair up to paint a picture! What a mess!

Molly with a Kind Heart

By: Madison Fili

One late winter day a brown bear named Molly woke up early from her hibernation nap. Molly started trotting out of her cave and into the forest. Any animal that saw Molly jumped and ran away. Molly was wondering why everyone was running away from her. She wasn't going to hurt them; she only wanted to be friends with them. Molly started walking again and saw a bunny and said, "Hi!” The bunny backed up, fell on the ground, got up and ran away.

Molly was sad. No one wanted to be friends with her. "If only they would understand. I'm supposed to be big and mean, but I'm not like other bears. If only they would listen to me, and let me tell them that." Molly continued walking and sat next to a tree. She started crying because she had no friends and no one would even listen to her.

Then, animals came crowding around her, scared and terrified."Are you okay?” they asked in a scared voice. "No," Molly answered. "What's wrong?" they asked. “No one wants to be friends with me," Molly answered. "Well, could we be friends with you?” the animals said. Molly's eyes brightened. " Are you sure? I'm a bear and no one wants to be friends with me," Molly said. "But we do," they answered. “Ok, I will be friends with you!” Molly was happy that she finally found friends to play with and talk to. Molly lived happily ever after!

News from the Library

Students can now access e-books on their home computers as well as at school. There will be a library lesson for each class to explain what these books look like, how to use them, and an explanation of how to get to them from the Penn Delco web-page.

There are two types of eBooks: Follette and Tumblebooks. In addition to being able to read books and to hear them being read on your home computer, there will be quizzes to take and games to play. Many of these book titles are also Reading Counts books.

Be sure to tell Mrs. Watson if you like being able to choose and read these e-books at home. Do your parents and brothers and sisters like them too? If there is enough interest, we will make these books a more permanent part of the library collection.

wrist and feeling for the beat.

Count how many times your heart beats in 10 seconds and multiply that number by 6 to find your heart rate per minute. It should be between 70 and 120 beats per minute.
