Mathematical Understanding for the Common CoreWorkshops for Elementary TeachersWe are offering a series of three full day workshops designed to help elementary teachers understand and implement the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics (CCSSM). Sample tasks, investigations, and assessments will be used to illustrate the K-6 Mathematics Standards and to build a deeper comprehension of key ideas like place value, number operations, fractions, geometry, algebra, reasoning, and problem-solving. The intent is that teachers would complete all three sessions of this program but they may sign up for single sessions as well. The goal is to increase the mathematical learning and achievement of students by expanding the mathematical content knowledge and understanding of their teachers. Each session will provide increased mathematical content knowledge while incorporating the CCSSM and the Mathematical Practices.Session 1: Number Sense and Fractions: Dr. James OlsenThis session will focus on place value, number operations in base 10, the number system, and fractions, decimals and percents. Teachers will engage in common core tasks that introduce and develop these key ideas and will leave with a deeper understanding of these concepts, the related procedures and their classroom implementation.Session 2: Algebra/Reasoning Dr. Kim HartwegThis session will focus on operations and algebraic thinking and expressions and equations. Teachers will engage in problem-solving tasks that help develop algebraic ideas and that relate algebra to arithmetic. Research and its implications for teaching will be shared showing how students learn to understand and interpret the meaning behind various problem structures for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Teachers will use and facilitate algebraic reasoning using tape diagrams/model drawing, experience how algebra connects to other topics and domains, and develop a deeper understanding of algebraic concepts and procedures.Session 3: Geometry Dr. Bob MannThis session will focus on geometry and measurement. Teachers will engage in common-core tasks that incorporate various geometric shapes and demonstrate important properties and relationships. They will also use activities to investigate critical concepts such as area, perimeter, and similarity. Teachers will experience how students can learn geometry in a hands-on, minds-on environment and will develop a deeper understanding of many facets of Geometry. We are looking for Regional Offices of Education in western Illinois to host these three teacher inservice workshops. Time: 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.We’d recommend a 30 minute lunch be provided and that the teachers earn 6 CPDU’s for each workshop they attend.Jim Olsen, Kim Hartweg, and Bob Mann all are teacher educators in the Mathematics Department at Western Illinois University.
